John Sherman, Secretary of tin Treasury, in answer to direct inter- rogatory, says that the old silver clutter of 41a 1-2 grains was never deprived of its legal character, and that it is a legal tender for any sum. Much alarm has been created at Moscow by the appearance ot the Siberian plague. It is believed that the seeds of the plague were brought .from Tiflis, either by Turkish pris- oners or Russian invalids. Mr. W. W. Carr, route agent on the Texas and Pacific road from Texarkana to Fort Worth, who was. suspended on account of mail rob bel ies on his route, has l>een reinsta- ted, after a thorough investigation. The guilty man is not named Carr. An effort is being made to get a portion of the proceeds resulting from the sale of the public lands ap- propriated to the aid of the public schools. The agitation of the construction of narrow guage railroad from this city to Sabine Pats, has lead our cit- iaens to take considerable interest in the Pass as a harbor, and anything reliable on the subject is read with interest. A dredge boat is now en- larging and deepening the channel into the bay, and sixteen feet of water is already reported, and it is believed to be permanent. It is confidently asserted by those superintending this work that with an appropriation of $150,000 a channel can be made ad- mitting yessels drawing twenty or twenty two feet safely into Sabine bay. where they will find thirty feet extending a distance of seven miles. When the mud and clay formation is removed the current increases in volume, and there is good reason for believing it will continue to increase and keep the channel open. Tyng an- nounces that on the 1st of May he will retire from the pastorate of St. George's Episcopal church, New York, which he first assumed thirty three years ago. The North Texas says Mr. R. Pe- terson, of the St. Louis Common Sense, intends to cover hi lots in Paris, on the south side of the square, with good brick store buildings. Thursday Mr. Maxey called up the Senate bill appropriating $200,000 for the erection of suitable posts for the protection of the Rio Grande frontier, and it was passed.
