TEXAS MINING AND TKADE JOURNAL. ROBERTS WILL BE AN ISSUE. A SPECIAL from Washington to the "Globe-Democrat" says now that Helen Gould has taken up the fight against B. H. Roberts, the polygamist Congressman from Utah, it is more than ever certain that Roberts will be one of the ear- liest issues in the coming Congress. Congressman Roberts, who, as is well known, is a Morman with three wives, is preparing for the fight which he sees ahead of him. He has already retained counsel, and the precedents which will likely influence action upon his case are being carefully gathered. According to competent authorities who have investigated the status of Mr. Roberts, it is said he cannot be charged with having violated any statutory law, the Edmonds anti-polygamy act, which would cover his case, being in force only in the Dis- trict of Columbia and the Territories. It is also said that the House has invariably decided that offenses against the moral law are not within the jurisdictien of the H...

GENERAL FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC NEWS NOTES Of the 16,701,000 tons of coal produced in West Virginia in 1898, probably 15,000,- 000 were consumed outside of its borders. The Anglican Church congress in session in London seems to have widened rather than lessened the divisions in the National church. TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. WASHINGTON LETTER. Washington, October 18, 1899. Special Correspondence to JojJRNAL. I NDIVIDUALLY, officers of this Government are at liberty to entertain any views they please concerning the war be- tween Great Britain and the Transvaal Republic, but offi- cially they niust be strictly neutral, that being the position which the United States Government has assumed and will maintain during the war. Our Consuls will look after the interests of British citizens in South Africa, but that has 110 significance, be- ing only a return of the courtesy extended to us by British Con- suls in Cuba during the war with Spain. The movements of the war have been followed with great interest in Washington. There are open sympathizers for both sides, but there is only one opinion as to the ultimate result. The Boers may win vic- tories for a time, while Great Britain is massing its troops, but in the end their defeat and the wiping out of their Government is regarded...

TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. 3 'Bob's" Farewell Supper. Judging from the manner in which the members of Hunter Fishing and Boating Club proceed to "blow out" on the occasion or, that is, immediately preceding the occasion—of the mar- riage of one of its members, that fun-loving band is somewhat of the opinion that the punster who said M was the beginning of matrimony and the end of freedom knew whereof he spoke. The Journal man is not prepared to express an opinion in the premises, but he is prepared to say that on last Saturday night Mr. Robert L. Gurgainous was the recipient at the hands of his gentlemen friends of an ovation long to be remembered. This "send-off" was tendered to Mr. Gurgainous by his bachelor and benedict friends in honor of his coming marriage, when he would lead to the altar Miss Lela Pearl Davidson, one of Thur- ber's most popular and accomplished young ladies. Besides an elegant spread, specially prepared, the evening was spent in different games, conversa...

TEXAS MINING AND TKADE JOURNAL. THE AHERICAN BOAT WON. cup which the old schooner "America" won so com- 1 mandlngly against all comers over the course around the Isle of Wight in 1851 and brought back across the seas, will probably remain in America another year, a defiance to the world. In a glorious breeze., over a windward and leeward course of thirty miles, the "Columbia" scored against the "Shamrock" Monday at New York in the first race of the 1899 series for the trophy. She bounded across the finish line fully a mile and a half ahead of the challenger, defeating her by 10-14 actual time, or 10:08, corrected time, after allowing the six sec- onds handicap which the "Columbia" must concede to the chal- lenger on account of her long water line. It is said that it was a decisive contest, a magnificent race, magnificently saile;l and magnificently won. Opinion as to the merits of the two boats had been somewhat divided, as a result of the flakes during the past two weeks. Although ...

TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. LOCAL AM) PERSONAL N< )TLS. This is the day the ghost walks—T. R. Hall is chief spook. The Texas State Fair and Dallas Exposition closes tomorrow. Mrs. M. A. Woodson returned from the Dallas Fair on Mon- day. ■ The health of the camp is remarkably good—so say the doc-; tors. Major W. Wassail returned Thursday from Fort Worth, Dal- las and the Fair. If you have a news item tell us about it—help us to make The Journal a breezy local paper. Mr. Will Bowdry went to Fort Worth yesterday to visit his parents aud—come back Monday. The yard crews are mighty busy people these days—in fact they have been all summer and fall. The Good Templars are to have a box supper and tackey party at the hall next Tuesday night.
