THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 1883. now A Washington correspondent of the Louisville Courier-Journal tells a good i story on Col. Robert Smalls, the colored member of congress from South Car- olina. He was standing among a group of people who were admiring the statue of Robert Fulton. Smalls asked of a gentleman standing near him, whom the statue represented, and being told, asked what Fulton had ever done. The gentleman replied that he ran the first line of steamers between New York and Europe. "Is he running them yet?" •'No," was the calm response, "he has Bold out to Jay Gould."
