PUBLISHIED FRIDAY MORNINGS. FRIDAY, MAY 18, 1900. BAFFLES AND GAMBLING. .. .. .. ,? . . . .- - .. ON the occasion of Archbishop Carr's address when performing the opening ceremony in connection with the late bazaar held in Healesville in aid of the Roman Catholic Presbytery, the re marks made by,.tlat gentleman anent the heading of this article will be well remembered. At a meeting held re cently in Melbourne, Arclbishop Qarr commented on bazaars and raffles and gambling, and he is reported to have said tlat if he knew a young man who was tempted to.4e?a garmbler,; he would recommend a few visits to a church bazaar as a certain cure for such ten ,dencies. A good deal of interest was itaken in the Melbourne Honpital Bazsar at Easter, and much, money seemed to be gathered in, and yet we find the secretary of the hospital say iipg 1se was disappointed at so small a return as 2ý00.. \We wonder what the result would have been had no raffling been allowed ! PLANTING AN ORCHARD. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 18 May 1900

PLiNHTING AN ORCHARD. -o Perhaps every orchardist has his own individual way of planting trees, and some methods are better than others. The experiences of growers are, however, always worth publishing, and the following is therefore given by a fruit grower who practised with gratifying success;-- - Large deep holes were made with spade and shovel, between three and one-half feet square and three feet deep; of course to make the hole this size requires considerable digging, and one man will not be able to set very many trees a day, but when he gets the work done it is thoroughly done, and the trees will grow and hive great advantages over those planted in the usual haphazard manner. Two-year-old trees were set with uncut roots, which were careftlly spread over the surface of the bottom on the rich soil that was thrown into the holes to a depth of nearly thirty inches, thereby affording a rich supply of plant food for the young rootlets to begin feeding on as soon as covered. The ric...

I've been pulling apples all the week. i think I'd nearly as soon get married as pull apples, so if you are a nice young man just come along, that is to say if you are not a farmer. THE BADGER RIVER. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 18 May 1900

THE BADGER RIVER. Hark ! to the river's joyous song, Floating on the scented air, Like fairy voices borne along Through the silent forrest there ! As it rushes on in gladness By ferny bank and slope— There is peace within the sweetness   Of its every rippling note ! Glad sounds of life are rarely heard, On the banks where the wattles bloom; And the lonely cry of the lyre bird Breaks mournfully through the gloom. Dark ranges loom against the sky, Like a mighty fortress wall, Whose lofty summits reared on high— Tower proudly over all. Where the musk trees, heavy scented, Shed their fragrance o'er the stream, There are gullies seldom entered By the sunbeam's golden gleam. Beauty spots where the violets peep; Shaded nooks where mosses grow; Nature's garden made complete With a beauty that only the soul doth know. Beauty spots that a dreamy painter, With longing eyes might view— Till the sunlight fading, growing fainter, Blurs his dream with a dusky hue. —By L. J. McArthur, ...

No Title [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 26 May 1900

Business men should consider before sending away for printing to firms who have only their own welfare at heart and don't care how your own locality pro gresses, whilst the local printer has always to study the welfare of his own locality, by watching and recording any movement that tends to the advancement of the dis trict as 'a whole. We don't blame the foreign printer at all, but the townsman, whose one aim should be to support local industry whenever practicable, and in the lmatter of his printing we can prove he has no "get-away" at all. If he has his doubts let him give us a trial, and a con tinuance of his orders to us is assured.
