THREE YEARS ON THE GOLDFIELDS OF VICTORIA. CHAPTER III. New Quarters and New Characters. [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 9 November 1860

THREE YEARS OV THE GOLD FIELDS OF VICTORIA. BY JACK JONES. CHAPTER III. New Quarters and New Characters.   Tranquility having been restored, the candles re-lighted, the house presented the appearance of respectability in ruin; yards of calico might be seen fluttering in all   directions. The Flute Player was requested to 'shout,' as the cause of the disturbance.   This she did. The man called 'Old Horse" had received       a nasty cut on the right temple, which was   bleeding profusely, but no one seemed to take the slightest notice of it. I had some sticking plaster and an astringent liquid by me, which I applied, and succeeded in   [stopp]ing the blood. The Flute Player was now in an ad- vanced stage of drunkenness: she could not articulate words distinctly, to the great amusement of those around her, whom I am happy to say were not more than six or seven, out of upwards of thir...

CHAPTER IV. A Claim-its failure and abandonment. [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 9 November 1860

CHAPTER IV. A Claim—its failure and abandonment. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday were occupied in purchasing the necessary tools. A number of boards were obtained from the sawyers for the purpose of making sluice-boxes, for which boards we paid two shillings and sixpence per lineal foot; so that, when the set, consisting of four sluice- boxes were complete, the cost was about £16. Long-handled shovels and picks were ten shillings each, and everything in   like proportion. The apparatus being complete, the ground was next marked out and a propect tried in several places. In each place the yield was about a quarter of a pennyweight to the pan of dirt. This was considered very   rich, as undoubtedly it was. A difficulty now presented itself with re- gard to the 'tail water.' We must either erect a waterwheel and California pump, or else buy into the adjoining 'tail race.' As many of my readers may nor under- stand the above digging phraseology, I may here expla...

The Observer. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9PM. "Nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice." [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 9 November 1860

THE OBSERVER   FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9th.         " Nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice."     Parliament is to be dissolved, repre   sentatives are to meet their constituents,   and the public are to decide whether they   will have Mr. Robertson's bill, or one prepared by the Opposition; whether they will have free selection before or after   survey. The measure is now fully before the country ; the arguments on both sides have been exhausted, and any allusion to   the matter at present would be superfluous and unnecessary. All the reasoning of which the mind of man is capable will not expedite the course of events; and anxious as we may be to have an equitable and liberal land policy adopted, by which the energy of the people may be concentrated in the enhancement of the prosperity of the country; let us not, in our haste...
