Wednesday last in this town was not only recognised as a bank holidny but the principal business places were closed and those connected with them made off to the Hub to see the annual show there. The special train which left for Berrigan that morning was comfortably filled, so that the Berrigan Show Committee will have no need to fear having to make up anything on their venture. The train left the Jerilderie sta tion about 10 a.m., nearly 15 minutes behind time, and even then there were some who were left behind. On arriving at Berrigan the visitors found that, regarding dust, in getting away from Scylla they had fallen into Charybdis,i for tho storms of dust blow ing along Chanter and Jerilderie streets wero equally as bad, if.not, worse . than any that ever blew along the streets ; in the City of.the ^Plains.' - . BIG CROWN LAND SALES. BY PUBLIC AUCTION. AN ATTEMPT TO RAISE THE WIND. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 18 February 1898

BIG CROWN LAND SALES. BY PUBLIC AfJCTIQN. AN ATTEMPT TO RAISE ?HE WIND. Four, or five weeks ago we drew attention to the inconsistency of Mr. J. II. Carruthers, Minister for Lands, when ljo stated to ono of his daily Freetrado mouth organs that he was totally opposed to sales of- Crown lands by public auction. Relying on the good faith of tho Minister for Lands, we re published tins, but tho lollowmg 11 Government Gazette ' to hand played entirely a difl'erent tune, for in it there were some 20,000 acres of land, some of it the pick of the agricultural land in Riverina, notified for sale. As we then pointed out we had not far- to, look for the reason of Carruther's somersault, and which made him eat his own words. From a Sydney contemporary this week wo learn that during the past month or so there have been no loss than 111,648 acres of our Crown lands to be offered for sale in such a .manner that the proceeds of these will be re ceived into the Treasury beforo Mr. Reid brings out h...

BERRIGAN A. AND H. SOCIETY. EIGHTH ANNUAL SHOW. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 18 February 1898

BERRIGAN A? AND H. SOCIETY, EIGHT!} ANNUAL SHOW, The eighth annual show of the Berri gan A. and H. Society was held on tho society's 'grounds on Wednesday last. The day was rather warm, and the strong winds blowing made it rather unpleasant. Fully 1000 people were 011 the grounds. Tlie Society this year held their exhibition on a grant of their Own. It has ivn are^of about ten acres, which is rather small, but it is possible that as the Society gains in strength, an additional area might bo obtained. The site chosen is nice and convenient to the town, and an easy five minutes walk from tho railway station. The grounds are fairly sholtered, too, by the timber growing around. Tho im provements on the ground already speak volumnes for the energy of the Com mittee. Tho ring is enclosed, sub stantial jumps aro erected, a high, roomy, well lighted shed for the exhibits has just. been erected for the fancy and miscellaneous sections. There was a marked improvement in the number of exhibits...
