Cartwright's Pictures. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 14 August 1920

Cartwright's Pictures. Every ÍFriday is alike now ; unless yo» get in early you have to squeeze iii behind "the gentleman in blue,'' or make yourself a confounded nuisance to the doorkeeper bj* standing right in the way of folks wishing to leave the hall. Every seat occupied, and the gal- lery likewise ; and Monday is getting like it. 'No wonder it is so; for Cart- wright makes a boast that only once in fourteen years has he disappointed his patrons by not giving them what he advertised he would do. And on. this occasion he was over in Melbourne ¡buying and arranging for the use of many of the excellent films we aro hav- ing unrolled to us at the present time. ¡He argues that there is no good pur- pose served by either disappointing his patrons, or dishing up worn-out ^stuff to them,* and this latter accounts for his having dropped out of Monday night for a short time, as the difficulty is enormous for him to get really re- liable materials for this, his second string to his how, in...

Municipal Ferry Boat. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 14 August 1920

Municipal Ferry Boat. . Because the Council aro pushing ahead -with really sound and progres- sive developments at present is no rea- son why another idea should not bo placed before the public for them to think about, and if thought advisable approach the Council with a view to getting them to put it into operation. Possibly somebody could be prevailed upon to render first aid to the project, and lick it into shape. Brierly, the distance for pedes- trians from West Ulverstone into Ul- verstone, and vice versa, and the loss of time, is such that, if possible, some means of cutting both down demands attontion. If thc Council employed one of our old men, or a partially incapacitated returned soldier, to work a. ferry boat from the wharf steps across to the op- posite "bank of tho river, making a small charge, they would bc doing seve- ral things. (1) Pinding a job for a deserving man. . (2) Providing a real convenience. to the ratepayers, and particularly tile visitors when amongst us...

Sports Scheme. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 14 August 1920

Sports Boheme. Saturday next, the 14th of August, .will be, we hope, a lucky day in the history of the sports écheme. The whole enterprise comes up for discus- sion before the Council again, as at the last meeting it was, on the pro- posal of Mr E. Hobbs, postponed for a month to enable the Town Council Committee to confer with the "Big Four" to wit, the quartette of ordin- ary common or garden citizens : Dr. Ferris, and Messrs. A. C. Solomon, R. G. Stanley, and G. P. Taylor. In the interval several meetings have been held, and the enthusiasts of the several sports in their town have push- ed on the formation of their working committees ; particularly is this the case with tho Bowlers and Golfers. It is quite certain the visitors to Ulverstone will be well catered for in these two "pastimes and clean sports," for both have enthusiastic supporters in the town who are out to do their bit to boom the town for all its worth. The racecourse proposals at the presonit time are the stumblin...

Football. BURNIE ASSOCIATION v. N. WESTERN UNION. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 14 August 1920

Football. BURNIE ASSOCIATION v. N. WESTERN UNION. The interest in this match is daily increasing, and through the efforts of Mr F. B. Barber, the secretary to the N.W.U., the Railway Department have decided to delay the Nietta train on Saturday, the 21st inst., until 5.45 p.m., to enable the folks up that line the pleasure of watching the match out to its finish. Excursion fares "will hold good from all the stations on that day, so an opportunity of doing a little shopping, and then watching tho match, is given the public at a verv reasonable outlay. So far tra- velling expenses and the match are concerned ; of the shopping we cannot sneak ! Prices of admission will be : Gents, ls 2d; ladies, 7d. The mid- day train at Burnie, will be delayed half an hour to enable the Burnieites and their followers to get a wash and brush up, and a scrambled lunch be- fore leaving. The frame should he a splendid one, as both teams are sure to be the creme de la creme of their respective combinations...

Push Blkes and Business. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 14 August 1920

Push Bikes and Business. It is noticeable that the general prosperity of the whole community is being reflected in the numerous addi- tions to our tradesmen on the one hand, and to thc enlargement of the business premises of many of those already established. Take for an example of the latter class the case of W. Guy, motor and push bike specialist, in Ilei bey-street. "Billy," as he is popularly known, came amongst us some six months ago, and to-day he has doubled his shop and factory accommodation, and his staff of mechanics has increased pro- portionately. He occupies a unique position in tho own, as the only firm specialising in motor bikes, and as such he has built up a sound and ever increasing business connection. Why is this? Because he knows the con- struction of motor " bikes and push bikes from the cradle to the grave ; in fact from A to Z, and consequently the pubic go to him. It is everything to know that you are talking to a tradesman when you Avant a bike, cither moto...

Law, Loot, and Late Hours. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 14 August 1920

Law, Loot, and Late Hours. There was far more law in Ulver- stone on Saturday last than there is either beef or pork in some saus- ages! As a matter of fact it was full of it. Our rtrio of legal luminaries had as companions for the afternoon and evening, at a sort of "Professional Profiteering Parle," their brethren of 6s 8d fame, from along thc Coast from Latrobe to Wynyard. Needless it is to say they were "putting their heads together," and the Lord knows what that meant, and ? what may be expected by tho poor pub- lic. The precise nature of their delibera- tions we do not know, of course; but it is safe to say they were "out on the make," or, at anyràte, law isn't going to cost tho silly one Avho go in for it anything less than it has been doing. . Fumers' Hotel was tho scene of their activities, and afternoon tea and dinner had been polished off by them ; in fact, The tell-tale hour of ten o'clock had been announced before they left the hospital quarters provided for them by "Mi...

Look on this Picture. Golf Defined. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 14 August 1920

v / Look on this Picture. V _ /\^ Golf Defined. ?-.The scoring card of the North Bor- wick Golf Club at home contains the following lines by 'Mr D. R. Forgan, of Messrs. R. Forgan and tion, St. Andrews : "Golf is a science, the study of a lifetime, in which you may exhaust yourself, but never your subject. It is a. contest, a duel or a melee, calling for courage, skill, strategy, and self control. lt is a test of temper, a trial of honour, a revealer of charac- ter. It affords a chance to play the man, and act the gentleman. "It means going into God's out-of doors, getting close to nature, fresh air, exercise, a swooping away of men- tal cobwebs, genuino recreation of the tired tissues. It is a cure for care, an antidote to worry. lt includes com- panionship with friends, social inter- course, opportunities for courtesy, kindliness and generosity to an oppo- nent. It promotes not only physical health, but moral force." And on this "bunkadoodleido." The business of a recently held me...

"Tittle-Tattle." [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 21 August 1920

"Tittle-Tattle." "Nietta doesn't appear to be any freer from those individuals who manufacture lies about their neigh- bours, and take delight in circulating them after manufacturing. The latest piece of scandal was that Miss Blyth, the recently "promoted mistress of the Nietta State School, had left the buildings in a disgusting- ly .filthy condition, and that the in- coming mistress had had to have same thoroughly cleaned in order to make them fit and healthy for the children to work in. Now there is not one single grain of truth in this cruel slander ; in fact, Miss Ross has authorised her name to be mentioned as having found every thing spick and span, and as they should be when she took over the duties It, would be a really satisfac- tory thing if the author, or authors, . of these lies could be traced and nail- ed to the counter, so that au example might be made of them as a deterrent to any others trying their hands at mud slinging. -X. >Ar -X
