MANSFIELD SHIRE COUNCIL. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 27 August 1869

MANSFIELD SHIRE COUNCIL. An ordinary meeting was held on Wednesday last, at which the following gentlemen were in attendance :-Dr Rowe (President), and Crs Chenery, Kitchen, and Baldry. The two new members (Messrs Cotter and Tomkins) also took their seats at the Board. The minutes of the previous special and ordi   nary meetings were read and confirmed; TENDERS. Upon opening the tender box, it was found to contain nothing. This was probably on account of the fiact that insufficient notice had been given of the work required to be tendered for viz., to erect a crush at the pound. On the motion of Cr Kitchen, seconded by Cr Baldry, it was ordered that tenders should be in vited by advertisement. . " CORRESPONDENCE.   From D. Masterton, respecting the hall lamps, stating that they were the only kind procurable suitable to the purpose, and enclosing a sketch as a guidance to suspend them. MR. DUFFY ON STATE-AID. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 3 September 1869

iMR. DUFPY ON STATE-M.I). h19r M'Oulloch's resolutions to abolish State. aid were diFecussed in the LogislativeAssombly on Wednesday evening, and after i disotlssion, were carried by 35 to 10, Mr D)uff voting with tie minority. As the speech of the hoen. member is :ery much to the point, we give it in full, as re. ported in a contemporary : Mr Duffy said that having arrived at the same conclusion as the hen. member for Btrighton, by a awidly divorcctt path, lh thought that it was his duty to strate his reasons for the vote he should give on the question. When he entered that chamber, 13 years bufore, he was in favour of the State aiding all religious denominations. The reason of his holding this view was, that in all the best governed kingdoms the religious were supported by the State. It was so in Catholic France and Belgium, and in Protestant Saxony and Germany. But though this was so, he never for an instant supposed that religion could not elist without this aid. MELBOURNE. September 1. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 3 September 1869

d MELBOURNE. is (FROu Oun owe CORESPOsD&ET.) September 1. The arrival of the mail on Sunday, four av days in advanco of contract time, is especially . to be noted, as it shows that the seorvio may o easily be done in 45 days, whicli would be a d considerable boon to the mercantilo commu nity. Tho rapid passage also of the 'Somer setshire in 59 days, seems to point out the fact that screw auxiliary steamers will eventually be our proper means of communication, and the opening of the Suez Canal will tend to do-, 1L volope that style of ship building, bcause that t route, if ever it is adopted by traiding ships to I this colony, will iequrire to :be do by:scroew t steamers. There is considerable force 'in the a remarks made by the gentlemon who vaited on Mr. Verdon in London, relative to the adoption of Marsoilles as a port forthe recep .tion of our great staple (wool).. I have no a doubt but that the 'voyago to that port could be made by trading vessels- in 45 days, and this w...
