QUEENSLAND. JÎRISDASK, Monday. Splendid rains have fallen in various por- tions of the colony, relieving many drought stricken districts. The Intercolonial Fruit Show opened here on Saturday. There was a splendid exhibi- tion of fruit, and all the Southern colonies competed. Mr Eady, the New South Wales Railway Commissioner, arrived in Brisbane on Friday night to confer with the Queensland raiiway officials on matters of mutual concern. Mr Thos. Glassey on Saturday presented to thc Govenor a petition signed by 11,000 per- sons praying for thc release of the Coombe Martin and Ayrshire Downs outrage prisoners. His Excellency promised to confer with his advisers on the matter, and communicate the result to Mr Glassey. ' Special religious services wstc held in almost every Church in the city yesterday. Caledonian Ball. A most enjoyable ball was held in the Divisional Hall on Tuesday night, 22nd June, when the Caledonian Association and Burns Club held their annual dance. The hall was splendidly decorated and the artistic arrangement of the palms, ferns and evergreens caine in for favorable comment on all sides. The floor was in perfect order and with the popular dance band (Messrs T. Nesbit, piano; H. Emmons, violin ; and W. Taylor, bass viol) the fifty couples who were present enjoyed themselves to the utmost. Owinç to thc unfavorable state of the weather and thc Jubilee demonstration on the : Esplanade, a large :number ' of people were unable to put in an appearance, but as it was just comfortable dancing room was -obtained.
