A DAY-LABOR COLLAPSE. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 24 November 1913

A DAY-LABOR COLLAPSE. Until Monday- last, a' building of pretentious, pro portions was in course of construction at Maroubra, by a detachment of- the Government's day-labor army. Then a wind sprang up, and the collective effort of 100 men, extending over some months 'was no more. To-day, the building is like a load of wood just tipped — the chaotic climax of a chaotic system of construction. After the site has been cleared, a start with the work of re-erection will be I made, 'still 'lij-vthe day-labor system,. CAMBERED HULL FORMS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 1 December 1913

CAMBERED HULL FORMS. An interesting departure from the normal design of ships' hulls is instanced in that of the , 'Honoreva,' a steamer built on the ''arch'' system. The camber ath wart-ships — that is. the arched deck — is practically universal, but to give a camber fore-and-aft to the decks is a novel departure. The 'Honoreva,' in section, looks as if she were 'hog- ged,'-' but as a matter of fact she is practically , immune from hogging. The arching fore-and-aft, while increasing the strength of the vessel materially, also increases the capacity of the holds amid-ships, for it does away with the necessity of supporting the decks with pillars amid-ships. Cal culations show that a vessel built on this principle will carry as much cargo as .one (5 per cent, longer built on the ordinary lines

INTERNAL COMBUSTION LOCOMOTIVES. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 1 December 1913

INTERNAL COMBUSTION LOCOMOTIVES. Mr. F. W. Lanchester, who, though he is a marine enginer in the service of the Admiralty, has devoted much attention to locomotion on land (the : well-known motor-car bearing his name was de signed by him), considers that internal combustion locomotives will from now on become more and more serious competitors of the steam locomotives. Describing a car, recently put into railway ser voicc in England, he says that, with such a car. there would be no difficulty in maintaining a two hours' service between London and Birmingham. The car has been run at TO miles an hour — with some falling-ofi in efficiency — but at 55 miles an hour, which would be the speed required for the London and Birmingham service referred to,; the cost of petrol would only be 12s. Mr. Lanchester seriously suggests the rail car as a substitute for the present train system.: The car that he refers to is driven by 'a pair of 6-cylinder Daimler engines, having a Gin. stroke and a Gin....

IN THE STOKEHOLE. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 1 December 1913

IN THE STOKEHOLE. The hot atmosphere of the stokehole of the s.s. 'Dimboola' was so thick with flying missiles for about five minutes during- its trip from Adelaide to Melbourne on September 15, that even the hardy firemen and trimmers, who were not directly con cerned in a fierce. combat between the Second En gineer and one of the firemen, decided that they would be safer in the bunkers and other places of shelter, and refused to come to their officer's assist ance until he threatened to put them in irons. As a sequel, Samuel MeReynolds, fireman, sum moned Benjamin Graham Measer, Second En gineer, in the City Court yesterday, for assault committed at sea. There was a cross-summons for assault against McReynolds, who went into the hospital with a fractured rib and a dislocation of the bones of the hands. # ? The Engineer, in his evidence, is reported to have said: 'I did not throw a hammer; only coal and two spanners. We were throw ing everything we could lay our hands on.' - The P....

Preference and "Graft Possibilities In Tendering for Government Machinery [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 1 December 1913

Preference and 'Graft' Possibilities In Tendering for Government Machinery During the week the Assistant Minister for Home Affairs was hotly criticised for his action in placing an order with Baldwin & Co., of U.S.A., for four locomotives. Per fervid protectionists ranted and raved, and those sturdy professional preachers of the gospel of Australia first, without recourse to the peculiar circumstances of the case in point, added to the .din. I he simple explanation by the Assistant Minister, that the order was of particular urgency, and 'that' no Australian manufacturer 'could' meet it in the specified time, helped to clear the air somewhat, 'aiul' at the sa'ni'e time pointed to the necessity of altering procedure in these matters. Dealing first with the subject of preference, the fact .was ' laid bare that considerable discrepancy existed between the foreign and Australian quotes, a discrepancy which, in our opinion, placed prefer ence out of the question. The Baldwin Co., ...

THE MAHENO. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 1 December 1913

THE MAHENO. The propelling machinery of the S.S. 'Maheno' is to undergo radical changes. The centre shaft is to be done away with, and the liner will then be driven by twin screws. The new geared turbines, which will revolve at 3000 r.p.m. will actuate shafts through intervention of Parsons reducing gear, bringing shaft speed to 150 r.p.in. This will give a maximum efficiency for both turbines and propel lors, give the liner increased speed, and reduce her coal consumption. Geared turbines represent the latest development in marine power, and though fitted to comparatively few steamers, their reliability is assured. The Maheno will be the only steamer on the Aus tralian trade fitted with geared turbines.
