WAR IN THE EAST. We are indebted to our Melbourne contemporaries for the following extracts:— LONDON, 20th August. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 1 September 1877

WAR IN TH-E EAST. We are Indebted to our Melbourne contem poraries for tile fuollowing extracts: LoNDoN, 20th August. Servia has resolved to militarily co operate with the Russians in Bulgaria. The lurks, during four or five days, attempted to take the Chipka Pass, but were always repulsed. The Russians are now reinforced, and an attack on Osman Pasha by the Russians.is looked for. A battle of a most bloody character is expected. Sir btafford Northcote, speaking at a meeting at Plymouth, said that England's policy was one of peace, but that if her interest should require strength she would be equal to the occasion. Neutrality would be observed until friendly intervention was possible in order to end the war.

PUBLIHEtD EVERY IATURDAY " EXOELSCOl."' SATURDAY, ]sT SEPTEMBER. Pressure of space compels us to hold over our leading matter and a leotter on the Yarra Valley luailway. There was a commotion at the council table on Tuesday last that by no means does credit to the councillors concerned. It was occasioned through an application fromn Cr Allardyce for two month's leave of absonc.c on the plea of urgent business, and, we are told, to save th2 shire the expense of another election. Every ratepayer is aware that for the last eight months the gentleman named, although holding the position of President, discharged the duties undertaken by him in anything but an attentive manner, appear ing at the council chamber only to preserve his right sit to there-once every four me,.t ings. Such conduot on the part of a coon cillor is not to be tolerated by the ratepayers, knowing as they do that there are other good eligible men willing to undert:ale the duties, and execute them in a proper manner. GOBUR. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 8 September 1877

. .. GOBUR. -+----- Thursday Inst being court-day, our township was unusually lively and at. traoivoe. A goodly number of cases was set down for hearing. Passing down the street after .the close of the court, I met a few full-blown litigants. To hear these expressing their several opinions of the presiding aarden was perfectly amusing. Meeting A (a sir cessful litigant), I was informed Cap tain Pasco was a most estimable, pains taking, just, and efficient warden. Leaving A,I next met B (dn unsuce.-sful litigant). who declared the warden was a paragon of excelling stupidity-the very quintessence of weakness and im becility, and utterly unfitted to occupy the position he does. As somewhat similar thirgs are said of all public officers, the warden will be able to appreciate this conflict of opinion con cerning himsell at its proper value. Poor foolish ones! If you consulted the higher and nobler instincts of your nature, you would see the disgrace and folly of repeatedly going to the c...

MELBOURNE LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 8 September 1877

MELBOURNE LET MER. -4 (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT). The proposed Land Tax, of which so much lius been recently said and written, has at length been presented to Parliament. in a definite form. Ilitherti the subject of land taxation has been merely an unsubstantial eihadow,. to fight or follow aecordlag to the political blan of those under whose notice it has been brought, but now it has assumed shape and subt.tAnce in the guise of a Minis terial measure. '.'h Government following in the Assembly has incontinently assented to the second reading, but it. is yet on, the cards that owing to en informality in its introduc tion it may have to be withdrawn and re, submitted. Of course neither the principles nor the details of tJmu Bill escaped criticism on the part of the Opposition,, and some of this was of a very trenchant, character, the chief' objection being to tioe arbitrary powers pro posed to be conferred on the cnmmissionlers. under the Act,. who are empowered not only. to fine bu...

'1i a ttdia & ea Mtnudard PUIILISHIIED EVERY HATUtDAY " EXCELS?OIRt." SATURDAY, 8TH SEPTEMBER. Muvc of the misapprehension which appears to prevail on economic and political subjects might lpossibly be removed it' the partisans of dlffterent doctrines would only take e the trouble to investigate for themselves the facts and results which accrue from pursuing a given policy or from the experience of those countries where theories at variance with their own are in prac tical application. Of course this is virtually impossible in many, if not the majority, of instances, so far as ordinary individuals are concerned; they have neither the means for ac quiring the necessary data on which to base their inquiries, nor the time nor in many instances the capacity or special training requisite for pursuing them with any hope of a satisfactory result, and therefore they are caom pelled for the most part to have their arguments and conclusions formed and applied for them by other people,...
