LATE FOBEIGN GLEANINGS. At the last monthly meeting of'the Acclimatisation Society, a report was read showing the steps which have been taken for the promotion of oyster-breeding. The report sayst " The subject of oyster-breeding, to which the attention of the Guernsey branch was early directed l>y the parent society, is rapidly becoming of greater practical and general importance.. " The increase and increasing demand for this delicate and nutritious mollusc; its increasing scarcity owing to . the exhaustion of the natural beds, and its ready conveyance into the interior of distant counties, have augmented its value, according to geometrical rather than arithmetical progression. BOBBEBY AT HOLLIDAYSBtTEQ. (Correspondence of the Phila, jEve.Bcaietut. 1 • ; Hoimdatsbueg, iFeb. 1.—Early: yesterday morning a daring attempt to rob James Gardner's Bank was discovered. The parties found Jrat. litUe difficulty in getting into the rooms through the wooden doors, though their labor was harder in gaining -access to the vault. 3?hey , quarried through brick and iron plates successfully, but the treasure yet lay encased within steel and iron;. that they did not reach. So .much for the "Thief-Proof Safe." They got perhaps two hundred dollars worth of internal revenue stamps, but no money. It is supposed that they are experts at the business. We do not know whether they abandoned the safe of their own accord, or whether they were fi-ighteried off by an elderly lady who, from the noise, got up and raised a window immediately over them, but made no further alarm , hot Knowing wiat the noise was.
