SORGHO CULTURE-NO . 2 [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 March 1884

SORGHO CULTURE-NO . 2 BY A . S . FOTJGEB . In selecting tho soil choose rich clay soil if you have such , as it is the best of all . In preparing this kind of land , let it be well manured with fresh horse manure in the fall of the year and then plow under immediately . In the spring if the ground is run together very much let it be plowed again . If soil appears light and loose let it lie till the foul seed in laud has germinated then harrow and thoroughly pulverize . This harrowing will destroy most of the foul seed . The manuring referred to is in opposition to the theory of most authors , - ovo __ ln-. es - it is correct doctrine for clay laud . I have had this experiment tried many times and never a failure ; syrup being always of better flavor than any other and tho . yield far above the average , juice usually testing 10 degrees B or more . Take notice I do not recommend this manure for all kinds of land . If used heavily you will have a strong and dark syrup and usually a po...

THE FAMOUS EASY-RUNNING Monarch Lightning Sawing Machine IT BEATS THE WORLD FOR SAWING LOGS OR FAMILY STOVE WOOD . SENT OH 30 VAYSrmiJfBIAL The boy in the picture on the left is sawing up logs into SO-inch lengths , to be split into stovewood tor family use . This is much the BEST and CHEAPEST way to get out your firewood , because the SO-inch blocks are VERY EASILT split up , a good deal easier and quicker than the old-fashioned way of cutting the logs into 4-fcet lengths , splitting it iuto cordwood , and from that sawing it up with a buck saw into stovewood . We sell a large number of machines to farmers and others for just this purpose . A great many persons who had formerly burned coal have stopped that useless expense since getting our Machine . Most families have one or two boys , 16 years of age and up , who can employ their spare time in sawing up wood just as well as not . The MONARCH LIGHTNING SAWING MACHINE will save your paying money and board to ONE hired man and perha...

A . Revolution iu Plowing . From the MOLINE PLOW 1 _ O ., Moline , Illinolg , we have received a handsome colored lithograph , 10 x 24 , showing in tho foreijround their new threewheel sulky plow , the Plying Dutchman , and on the left the phantom sW in full sail , manned with its ehostl y crew . An-ooompanyino circular gives full particulars of this new sulky plow , which is quaintly named the Plying Dutchman . The great points of superiority are briefly summed up as follows : Its construction is such that it is bound to run over one hundred pounds lighter than any other plow , either sulky or • walking , doing the same work . The plow is in front of the driver , and is carried and kept level by means of tl o perfect support of three -wheels , the front wheel running in furrow acting both as a support aud a gauge . NEW CANTILEVER BRIDGE [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 April 1884

NEW CANTILEVER BRIDGE On the mir . lii __ . an Central Railway . As an example of the wonderful progress of engineering skill , the cantilever bridge that spans the Niagara Biver , on the Michigan Central Railroad , is a most signal illustration . Tlie great engineering difficulty presented was to construct a bridge which must be erected over the angriest bit oi water in the world , without the aid of false track or temporary supports , and with a clear span of 500 feet . The design of the cantilever bridge is tho principle of a trussed beam , supported at or near its center , with the arms extending each way , and one end anchored or counter-weighted to provide for unequal loading . The Firth of Forth bridge in Scotland , with a clear span of 1 , ( 100 feet , is being built upon this plan , and in this country . SECTIONAL VIEW . the Frazer River bridge , 315 feet clear spau , on the Canadian Pacific , is now being constructed on the same plan , and the principle especially recommen...

Some Farmer Boys [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 April 1884

Some Farmer Boys Farmers boys are the princes that make the world s great kings . Great souls , whose thrones were the hearts of a mighty people , have ever been the uncrowned mouarchs of the plow . Many great men , whose memory has been like sweet incense in peoples lives , first got their fragrance from the fields and flowers . Lincoln , whose scepter struck off the centuryriven shackles of toilbent blacks , was a hovelborn farmer boy , whose soul was clean as nature s , whose heart was broad as the world . Garfield , who wore a crown made of a people s love , wasafarmcr sboy . Henry Clay , whose sil ver tones made august senates weep , whose voice goes ringing down the ages for truth and right , was a farmer s boy , the poor mill-boy of the slashes . Whittier , tho poet , is a fanners son ; nearly all tlie presidents were f armers sons ; so were Begums , Israel Putnam , Benj . West , the painter , and still an unnamed host .

Agricultural Chemistry [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 April 1884

Agricultural Chemistry BY P . H . JACOBS . LIME . Although the most beneficial results from lime are derived when its application is made in the fall , it will also be found a valuable agent in the spring when used on newly plowed sod land intended for corn . Where old pastures and grass plots have stood in grass for several years lime is the best substance that can be applied . The tendency of lime is to pass downwards into the soil , ! which fact , so well known , prompts the farmer to broadcast it upon the surface , in order that the most immediate results may be obtained , but its effects are constant , not only by reason of the direct influence exerted by the lime in its chemical action upon the vegetable matter , but through the continued chemical combinations that naturally occur among all vegetable substances during the process of decomposition . It is due to the hastening of chemical action on the part of lime that its benefits to the farmer are so permanent . Lime itself i...
