t Dup ' atome ^ [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 February 1906

Our Home Club By Mrs. L. J. Stephens atome ^ lftw By o / qnXl & tephens Z Country v . City Homes . —Since receiving a holiday visit from a sister who lives in the city , I am not at all inclined to envy city housekeepers . Here are some of the things , as I recall them , from which she suffers : _ Milk that tastes of the barn , and is bluer than Monday s rinsing water . Stale eggs , even at 25 and 30 cents a dozen . Surrounded by houses on every side so that one cant step out for a breath of fresh air without dressing for the street . No playgrounds for the children but a narrow lawn and the sidewalk . The nuisance of smoke that gets into the house nobody knows how , and casts a dark shade over everything . Awakened early in the morning by clanging street cars , rumbling wagons , newsboys and bells and whistles of every description , etc ., etc . To offset that I reminded her of the many advantages she enjoyed , social , church , educational and recreative , but so much ...

FORECAST . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 February 1906

FORECAST . It is truly gratifying to receive so many letters from our readers expressing their interest in and enjoyment of The Farmer s Wife , and it will be our care to see that their interest does not grow less as the months roll round . Our artist has designed a cover in colors for our paper this month , which is another attractive feature . It will appeal to our young folks .. Among the good things in this issue will be found the description of a system of farm waterworks , illustrated by diagrams , which was put in by a practical farmer at an expense that can be easily met by almost every farmer . . F : Roney Weir , a well-known western writer of entertaining stories of real country life , will contribute to the fiction of the March number and Mrs . Livingston s article in her series of Women in Rural Communities , will be one of her best . • Another of our gifted and practical Minnesota farmers wives has promised ah article that will prove of unusual interest , but she object...

MID-WINTER PLEASURES . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 February 1906

MID-WINTER PLEASURES . Those of us who live far enough from the equator to be frost-bound and snow-covered for some months each year , have sources of enjoyment that dwellers in warm climates can never know . Much labor and forethought is required to prepare for winter in north temperate and northern latitudes , but this is only a part of the years work that comes as regularly as the seasons roll round , and is not regarded as a hardship . And with the cellar and the woodshed or coalbin well filled , and the barns and granary stored with food for the domestic animals , the farmer s family is prepared to enjoy the winter thoroughly , when they have more time for rest and recreation than at any other season of the year . The work is so different from that of other sea sons that it is neither wearying or burdensome . Instead , with the clear , invigorating air acting as a tonic , and the slightest exercise sending the blood leaping through the veins , labor becomes a life-giving joy . ...

PLAN FOR SUCCESS .. [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 February 1906

PLAN FOR SUCCESS .. There are many women upon farms who , because they wish an independent income of their own , or perhaps because there is a mortgage to be lifted or unusual expenses to be met , feel that they must carry on some work aside from that of caring for the home and family , that shall promise pecuniary returns . Whatever this work may be , it is now time that plans should be made for it . If fresh vegetables are to be grown for market the area required and amount and kinds of seed needed must be decided upon . If some special kind is to be tried , navy beans , onions , popcorn or tomatoes , perhaps for canning , or maybe the growing of strawberries for market next year—whatever is to be undertaken should be planned for now , before the busy season comes on . If poultry for market is thought to be profitable , one should plan to set the eggs early , and so reap the larger profit in early chicks . Winter is nature and the farmer s season of rest , but while the body rests...

STATE CONTESTS FOR FARM BOYS AND GIRLS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 February 1906

STATE CONTESTS FOR FARM BOYS AND GIRLS . Last year the leading educators of Nebraska instituted a corn growing and cooking contest for g : : ! _ and boys , which was productive of widespreading interest , and proved an incentive to effort along those lines that was not only a pleasure but an educational means as well to hundreds of boys and girls who entered the contest , over 500 of whom were in attendance at the exhibition held in Lincoln in December when awards we re made . The state superintendent of public instruction was the general manager of the affair , the state agricultural school had supplied the contestants with 500 grains of corn each , and parents and teachers all over the state lent the movement the aid of their co-operation . There were over 200 exhibits of corn and many fine specimens of the culinary art , the affair closing with a banquet of several courses , every article on the menu card , from the soup _ to the dessert of corn ice cream , being made from corn p...

GIRLS IN THE FARM HOME [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 February 1906

GIRLS IN THE FARM HOME We read much about how to keep the boys on the farm . It is quite as necessary to make the farm home interesting and attractive to the girls . Don t keep them all the time at routine tasks—everyday drudgery . Give them a share in the interests of the home by talking over plans and prospects with them , and make use of their suggestions or let them carry out their own ideas . They will be much more interested and willing helpers if allowed to help about the fancy baking , the fine ironing , the canning , pickling and preserving . Let them take turns about the work , holding each responsible along certain lines a week about . Give them a room of their own and allow them to arrange it as they wish , requiring only that it be kept neat and in order . . Welcome and entertain their friends , and make a little party for them occasionally . Send them to town to do the shopping for the house now and then . They will- not be properly equipped to manage homes of their ow...

HEART AND HOME TALKS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 February 1906

HEART AND HOME TALKS . A common cause of unhappiness in the home is an over-sensitiveness on the ! part of the wife . The average man is a thoughtless individual . Once he has secured the girl of his choice to preside in his home , he settles down perfectly satisfied with conditions and proceeds to enjoy himself in his own way . The excitement of the pursuit and capture over , he is content with . possession , and puts aside the methods used to ensnare or attract the . chosen one . Having selected one from out the rosebud garden of girls and taken her to his heart and home he does not realize that there is any further expectations on her part . And , happy in the close , daily companionship of home life , he forgets or regards it as too much trouble , or as no longer expected , to bestow upon the wife the little attentions , courtesies and endearments he delighted to lavish upon the sweetheart . The average woman prizes all these much beyond the conception of the average man . She m...

LANGUAGE LESSON [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 February 1906

LANGUAGE LESSON 5—By Way of Reminder . A verb is a word that asserts action , being , or state of being . There is much difference between the action that a single word may express , and that state of being which precludes all action . It seems impossible for one word to express both motion and the relaxation which should follow ; but these-opposites we have in lie . Its principal parts , lie , lay , lain , are the same in both meanings . In its active sense , present tense , it means to assume a reclining or a horizontal position . I told him to lie down , and he —past tense , mind you , second form , — lay down . Usinghad or has with third form , one may say , He has lain down an hour . You have been so busy , let me take your place and you lie down . You perform the act of assuming a recumbent position , then the active part of lie ceases . You lie there—this is the other meaning of the word , perfectly motionless ; for if you so much as clasp your hands , clasp is the word that ...

HAPPY HILL FARM . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 February 1906

HAPPY HILL FARM . Maty Learns to Make Butter . BY MRS . C . C . WOUTERS . Mary was singing cheerily as she gave the kitty its pan of milk , ihen she dipped the warm water from the reservoir and poured it over the pretty new dishes in the still bright dish pan . A dash of soap powder , and a clean dish-rag , and the little housewife was ready for the universally disliked task of dish-washing ,. She did not appear to hate her work , however for sometimes a whistled strain came from her puckered-up lips , sometimes a sociable sentence addressed to the cat , while her hands flew as she washed each dish and placed it in a second dishPa She had all the table dishes washed , and was just pouring hot water from the teakettle over them , when John ¦ came in . . , Come out to the barn a minute , and see what I ve got out there he _ said . May I finish the dishes first ? Ill hurryl What is it ? An egg ? That would be good . It s about time those old gray hens were paying for their board . _ . ...
