POTO [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 June 1913

POTO New White Egg American Fowl For years , American poultry men have dreamed of a breed of heavy , market fowls that would be prolific layers of large white-shelled eggs . Now Albert Angell Jr ., a poultry expert of Ocean Co ., New Jersey , comes forward with one such new breed after ten years of experimenting . . The new creation as introduced by Mr . Angell has been christened the White Egg American Fowl . It has all the characteristics of the American breeds , such as the Rhode Island Reds , Plymouth Rocks , Wyandottes , etc . But instead of laying the brown shelled eggs , it produces large chalky white shelled ones in great abundance . The birds have a pure white plumage , with orange colored feet and shanks . The average weight is six pounds for females and seven and onehalf pounds for the males . The great object of the new fowl is to hatch the chicks early in the Spring of the year , when the cockerels can be disposed of _ t a good figure , raise the pullets to lavim . matu...

Hired Help For the Harvest _ . . . . [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 July 1913

Hired Help For the Harvest _ . . . . WHY DO THE FARMERS have so much trouble even- vear in getting help for thc harvest ? The woniler is whv wc should not have more trouble m getting extra men . Is there am other line of business in tlie world which requires , for one month or two in Ihe vear . about 2 . 64 S . 43 extra men which would not have trouble in getting them ? The fact is that we peter along with one or two men until haying and harvesting comes . Wc can not combine with our neighbors and change help as wc do in tilling the silos or threshing , for when hay and gram are lit to be cut thev must be cut and our neighbors are in the same pickle as we are . Wc therefore need two or three extra men . We send to the closest town or citv and if wc get any response to our appeals , we get a lot of hoboes whom we do not wish to take in and seat at the family table , much less wish to sleep them in the spare room where they would KCt their feet tangled up with the lace curtains . We t...
