Thc ground plan is a Latin..orbs, terminated by an apets. Its dirpiehaiona arc : Length, 485 feet; breadth of, body, 252 feet; between the walls ot the transept, 187 feet ; width of nave, from center to center of the col umns, 67 feet, which is double the width of the aisles; height of the crown of the vaulting nave, 153 feet; height from pavement to top of the statue of the Ma donna, 355 feet. The interior is divided into a nave and four aisles, by four ranged of cluster ed pillare. Fifty-two pillars, each formed of eight shafts, support the arches of "the roof. The meaning of this sweet word, which; ever has in its ring of joy and triumph as it falls upon the carvis, "Save now, wc pray." In the old Jewish worship it came in at frequent intervals as a refrain, the whole people taking it up and shouting it -with deep, glad voices whenever the priests paused in the recitation of the 'Hallel." The Psalms, from the 113th to 118th, were used fortius purpose, and were chanted on the occasions of great feasts of Dedication, Tabernacles and Passover, as well as on the first of every month.
