THE LATEST NEWS. confessed; and the people' are fear ing that it will be still greater, and are accordingly much alArmed. Corruption is charged as existing everywhere. Washington advicls say that the general tax bill will undoubtedly pass Congress-that tie desperate char acter of fie war is initing all politi cal parties; and that it will result in the passage of a general emnancipa tion act. Meantime there are evident inli cations that the subjugation of the cotton States is regarded and con fessed to be an impossibility. The Northern papets are filled with details of the battle of Shiloh. The charge of cowardice is very freely mlade against both generals and troops, and that several of the regi ments foully disgraced themselves. Grant, .in his official report, ad mits 1500 killed, and estimates the wourded at 3500....
