Cramer, of Fulton Co. the appointment of Doorkeeper of the Senate, and thus a little of the milk in the cocoa nut is accounted for. We are indebted to Governor Jons W. Geart, for an early copy of his message, also to Secretary of State Jordan, Surveyor General Beath, State Superintendent of schools Wickersham, and Hon. J Tl MrMiTt.rw. for valuable docu ments. The Pittsburgh journals arsertthat lion. Thomas J. Bigham, of that city, formerly State Senator, is to be placed at the head of the new State bureau of Labor and Statistics. Governor Hartrakft could make no better selection, and the new bu reau could not be entrusted to a more capable and worthy gentleman. Governor Geart. has vetoed the the apportionment bill, passed at the the last session of the Legislature. Among them 'may be specially noticed Triton Discipline a question now generally occupying the attention of statesmen and philanthropists throughout the civilized world; the condition end trcatmeut of - the insane and the workings of that class of institutions known as local charities, founded and conducted for benevolent purposes. These asylums are located .in various parts of the State, mostly however, in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Tbey are performing an excellent work relieving the sick, indigent, infirm and neglected portions of our popula tion. The Somerset Herald. WEDNESDAY, J motif 38, lsti. On Wednesday last the Legisla ture of New York re-elected lion. Roscoe Cosklisg.TJ. S. Senator, for another term of six rears. Alexander IJ, Stephens, late Vice President of the rebel confeder acy, has been nominated for Congress, to fill a vacancy occasioned by the death of General Wbight, from the Eighth district of Georgia. Mr. Ste phens has accepted the nomination and will doubtless be elected. Toe C S. Senate has adopted a resolution abolishing the franking privilege on and after July next Should the Ilouse concur, the Tost offiee Department will be self sustain ing, and postage can be largely re duced, as it is the transportation of matter free of charge that makes the mails so bulky, and so expensire to transport The lower House of Congress, a few days since, by a very large ma jority, voted for the repeal of the bankrupt law.
