i THE CHIEFTAIN. '" 1 " r- "- 1 TO HELP THE WOOL IRDWER8. The democrats and free silver cranks say: "A tariff is worse than useless, we want free silver." Let's sec about it. Under the McKinley law New Mexico wool sold for from 1$ to l8 cents per pound and sheep were worth $2.90, and the whole country was pros perous. Under the Gorman Wil son bill, wool is four and one cents per pound. The govern ment cannot pay its expenses, and no one having confidence, our home markets destroyed and given to foreigners. To remedy this, the democrats to keep them selves in power say: "Give us free coinage of silver, destroy at one blow one-half of the value o' all the money in the country and times will be prosperous." The republican party favors a pro tective tariff, keeping our home market for American workmen and keeping every dollar in the country as good as the best dollar on earth. When you do this, times will be prosperous and wool will be wurth from 18 to 20 cents per pound. CUR LEAD MINES...

THE CHIEFTAIN. ELECT CATEOS. The little state of Maine, with four members of the lower house of congress, has more influence In that body and upon the country than the great states of New York or Pennsylvania with their thirty four and twenty-eight representa tives each. Why? Simply be cause Maine has kept those four representatives in congress for many years and thus enabled them to establish a character in congress and to secure the co operation and assistance of all those extraneous influences that go to make success, whereas New York and Pennsylvania have pur sued a policy of constant change in their representatives who rarely get a chance to serve more than two terms and are thus hustled out of place before they fairly establish themselves in it, before they have the necessary experi ence to gain success. Mr. Catron is serving the first half of his first term in congress and has made a national reputation. It is to the interest of this territory to keep him at Washington. Albuq...
