Frontier Ballad. I want free life and I want fresh air; . And I sigh f'r the canter after the euttle. The crack of the whips like ehoia m battle. The melee of horns, and hoofs, and heads That wars, and wrangles, scatters and spreads; The green beneath and the blue above, And dash and danger, and life and love. And Iaeal Lasca used to ride With blue terape and bright-belled spur; I laughed with joy as I looked at her: ? Little knew the of books or creeds; An A e Maria sufficed her needs; . Little she eared, save to be by my side, To ride with me, and ever to ride. From San Saba's shore to Lavaca s tide. She was as bold as the billotvs that beat, She was at wli as the breezes that blow; From herlittie bead to her little feet She was grayed, Jn her suppleness, to and fro By each gust of passiont a sapling pine. That grow on the edge of a Kansas bluff. And war tvith the wind when the weather is rough, , Is like luu Lotca. this love of mine. She would imager that I might eat. Would ta.e ...

1 V-1v' If -9 v A Tcndor'Foot on the Cowboy. The cowboys arc men who are staunch friends and brave foes. Honest men who earn their money in an arduous calling, but who a.re willing to share that money, the last farthing, with their fellow-man if they find him in need, irresx)ec tive of age, color, persuasion, poli tics or nation. Men whose duty keeps them in the mountains, on the range, and far from the haunts of men, often for a year at a time, and then when granted a rest, in the brief interval they take a trip to town to supply their few wants and talrc a little diversion. The diversion soraetipics winds up in a spree, by which they generally do more harm to themselves than to , any one else. Because cowboys are j sometimes hilarious and sometimes .rough of speech, is no sign that "the' arc devoid of honor, and that they are 'incorrigible and also illit erate. On the contrary, the major ity are intelligent 3oung men, of tentimes collegians. In this strain I might proceed for an i...

I 14V BV HENftV B, LIVINGSTON. Within this Hall arc met again, Friends thro the weary yeans long parted ; The brave and high souled worthy men, Of early days the liou hearted: Who strong the pick, and from-the soil. Wrung untold wealth of golden treasures,. And round the camp fire's blazing light Told tales of oldtf me scenes and pleasures. How ehang'd is all since then, and oh! How thin the ranks of comrades olden ; Some rest by Mississippi's flow, Far from the land so fair and golden; Hut those who have survived the waves. Of time and tempest, still remember - With faithful heart their honored graves, From June's soft air to keen December. Where mountain trail and mule path ran, The iron horse goes madly prancing, And railroad bridges arches span Where bark canoes "were lightly dancing; Where solitude was wont to rule, All now is bustle and commotion. With mill, and meeting-house and school -And every other Yankee notion. The times are changed, but still the same In heart arc we- ...

The suspicion arose from the fact that every day the house is visited by quite a number of ladies ranging in age from sixteen to sixty. Tiie parlor of the house is occupied as an office by a young physician. It has lately cen discovered that he is engaged in a most remarkable business. To one of the visitors a News-gatherer is indebted for an explanation of a secret, which the majority of many rosy 4 cheeked maidens who promenade Chest nut street would prefer to remain un discovered. The visits of the young ladies" to the doctor are for no other pur pose than to get a healthy color; not painted, but a genuine healthy color. A News-gatherer was fortunate enough to have, throu...
