A SURPRISE. To the surprise of every one In and around White Oaks, a quiet wedding occurred at the residence ol John Y. Hewitt of that town last Monday aiternoon, at which Miss Florence McDougal, daugh ter of Judge and Mrs. H. C. Mc Dougali of Kansas City, Mo., was married to Mr. Ralph Roose velt, also of Kansas City, no one being present except the contract ing parties, Judge McDougal and Mr. Hewitt and the officiating clergyman. Nearly two mouths ago Judge McDougal, accompanied by his daughter, Miss Florence, came to this county to inspect his mining properties in the Gallinas and to close a contract of lease on the same, and a few days later visited his long time friend, Mr. Hewitt, at whose home they have re mained since that time. SCHOOL NOTBS PROM CORONA. School opened at Corona Sep tember 7, l'J08, under the care of Prof. J. II. Crawford and Miss bonnie Franks, with an enroll ment of eighty pupils. Many of Hie patrons of the district were present at the opctiinir. The in terest which has been manifested by the pupils in the last week is pleasant to the teachers and par ents. The prospect is that Co rona will have one of the best schools in the history of the place. The intecst that the teachers, parents and pupils arc taking in the school assures its success. 1 believe there is no town or com munity in New Mexico that is more liberal uud willing- in the upbuilding of the school than this disUict. The people of Corona arc now preparing to build a ten thousand dollar school building, which will add much to the up building of the town. TUB OLD MAIDS MAKB OOOD. The Old Maids' Association gave an entertainment at Wet more hall Wednesday evening', as per announcement. The hall was crowded, the receipts beyond ex pectation and the appreciation shown pleasing. Besides the transformation of thirteen old maids into gay, gig gling, fascinating young girls of sixteen, made possible by the occult knowledge of Prof Gierke, and wonder-working machine, each of the rejuvenated ones did something which showed their joy ut putting off the crow's feet and the tinge of gray. PROBADLY PATM. ACCIDENT. Jlarry Amsdcn, formerly a mi ner In White Oaks, met with a robal)ly fatal accident in the While Mountains about two miles cast of the Ellis ranch, Tuesday noon. He was driving a tunnel, and a shot having- failed to go, he went hack to examine it and the explosion occurred. A. broth er who was working at some dis tance heard his cries and went to his assistance. The injured man was convcyci to the Kills ranch, where he now lies, and Dr. Ranigcr of Oacura was hastily summoned. The doctor labored with his patient from 7 o'clock on the evening of the accident until three o'clock next morning.
