TpE IpEpEHDEHT, THURSDAY, JOtfE1G, 1895 Our Alleged Prosperity. Thero is one featiirc in the present state of affairs in Honolulu which cannot bo over looked and which it is rather difficult to harmonize with the oft-repeated phrases by the government party in regard to the wonderful prosperity which Hawaii and her rulers are now said to enjoy. The matter that we refer to is the frequent and common begging of Hawaiians and Portuguese who it cannot bo doubted tell the truth when they say that they are starv ing. '; Tho Hawaiian was never a beggar. One of the first impressions that tho stranger arriving here gets is the blessed absence of beggars and tramps. The Hawaiian has always, when hard up, found his neighbor's door open and a welcome to share his poi, gin and oven purse. It is different today. Neces sity has closed the door of tho neighbor, one being as bad off as the other. Our charitable church .people will of course call the Hawaiian beggar shiftless, good-for-nothing and la...

TpE ppDEBT. FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 1895 Observations. A local contemporary gato ike information from a late magazine that Captain Kidd was not a pirate but tho illegitimate privateer. Tho same thing was told the writer of this paragraph many veara aero bv a lady relative and namesake of the famous skipper, who said ho had letters of marque from tho English king to destroy pirates and French commerce. Thero seems to bo authority, however, for tho tradition that after this job was completed Captain Kidd took up privateering as a private enterprise, on the profit-sharing system with a picked crew. Piracy was as respectable a crimo in those days as the railway and sugar plantation wrecking of those days. In years to come, it may bo, C. W. Ashford and C. Creigh-ton will, probably, have their defenders for the filibustering schemes on Hawaii they aro now reported to have under way. The lady mentioned, who was associated with the present writer in the proof-reading department of a daily newspaper...

W s TpE gDEpEWDEllIT. SATURDAY, JUNE 8, 1895 About a Koad. There has been considerable agitation lately for the widening of the road which branches oil' from Wailciki road toward the beach. An afternoon paper has taken the mattor up in a rather haaty manner, and seems to blame ono of the property holders who owns land adjoining the road for obstruct ing the proposed widening.Tlio fact is that the road is of interest only to a few residents, who easily can afford to pay the cost of the widening. Judge Wideraann, who owns the land on the Wailciki side of the road, offered a few years ago all the land needed if the Tramways Company would run a line along the road, which would greatly benefit the owners and residents of the district. For some reason or other the Tramways Co. did not accept the offer, and pcoplo living in lower Waikiki have to foot it. Now comes Mr. Ena and asks for public help to widen the road that leads to his house, and Judge Widemann is the object of abuse because h...
