Humors of the Pension Office. wil [From the New York Star. pr( Since I wrote last I've been to isa Washington. It's a great place. I pr went down to see Mr. Bunconmbe, the Pension Agent, and I think perhals if' I'd stayed there six months I might have seen his aunt, but I hadn't the di time, so I gave it up. an I've been trying for ten years toget a pension out of the United States for an old lady, just turned ninety-four, he whose son was killed during the late wl inpleasanutness, leaving her without a He cent in the world-without any sup- I :o:rt whatever. The routine through he which this old lady and I have passed fa is long, not to say everlasting, and if to we should live uitil we gist the money, an we should be worse than the Wander- to ing Jew for age, and could discount Methuselah as easy as winking. lie The simple story of the claim is that the woman had a son who sup- Pr ported her. He was ass enough to be patriotic, enlisted in the navy, died in s the service, and left a...

Personal Sketches inWashington. The President and Vice-President,Sen ators, etc.-Their Habits and Peculi arities. The Washington correspondent of the Herald of Health writes as follows in the April number of that lively magazinee: THE PRESIDENT. Everybody knows that he is a smo ker, and a tremendous one, too. He told me that while he was in the field he smoked literally all the time, but that in civil life, confined to the house as he is many hours in the day, he has been obliged to ri duce the num ber of cigars he allows himself. Es pecially in walking does lie smoke. lie takes his solitary walks regularly every day, and graduates the length of the walk to the length of the cigar. When John Quincy Adams was Sec retary of State and President, he set an example of care for health, with reference to bathing. Every morning early, during the summer months, lie took his plunge into the Potomac. In that form of hydrophatic zeal, the present occupant of the White House certainly does not i...

Umnalbnonbille &bidf. Circular. ,The Liberal Republicans of Louisiana to their Political Friends Throughout the Union. The undersigned have determined to recomend to their lRepublican friends in Louisiana the propriety of attending the Cincinnati Convention, to asemble on the 1st of May. A statement of our reasolns for so doing is both necessary and proper. Pursuing a policy in other States similar to that pra ticed here in 1871, the office holders of Gen. Grant have packed conventions and sent delegates to Philadelphia, instructed to vote for his renomiuation for the Presidency. To doubt the propriety of this move ment disqualifies the delegate, and proscribes his attendance. In this mode public sentiment has been fore stalled, and the most trusted lea'ers of the Republican partyl ostracised. To such an extent has this work ro agressed that it is now evi t>eb. Philadelphia Convention posed almost exclusively o f r sanal frient. - l dependents to e President, i o there to reg...

Snmalsrnbi h ie . Gavazzi's First Sermon. I An Appeal from Italy to the Christians ] of the United States. [Fr(omthe New York Sun.] i The congregation assembled at the Fourth avenue Presbyterian Church, Twenty-second street, last night-was I one of the largest gatherings witnessed i for some time. The church was crowded to excess, numbers of people i standing out on the side-walk. The Rev. Dr. Thompson on being introduced by the Rev. Dr. Crosby said: It was well known how of late the political movements prepared the way of the Lord in Italy. Every one renimebers the good works of Count Cavour in the kingdom of Piedmont, and the principles he laid down have been carried out coutinuously and freely. The Grand Duke of Tuskany who had refused all civil and religious liberties of his subjects drove away one fine morning and left them to take care of themselves. They immediately, on being in pos session of such a privilege, unani mously declared their adhesion to the Kingdom of Italy, und...
