Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1985

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: May the mercies of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit be always with you! All of this month of March unfolds during the liturgical period of Lent. It is a blessed time for us to be called by the Church to enter more deeply into "prayer and fasting",but also through the death to our self-centeredness to receive new healing unto greater life. Fasting without deeper, more prayerful encounter with the indwelling Trinity is not a true religious act as Christian fasting should be. Prayer without inner healings on all levels of body, soul and spirit might foster even greater self-absorption and take us away from the true purpose of the call into the desert. It is for this reason that I have devoted this main teaching to the theme: Healing Through Prayer. We all would like better health, especially on the physical level. In deeper prayer the Spirit of the Risen Lord leads our consciousness into greater area...

HEALING THROUGH PRAYER [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1985

HEALING THROUGH PRAYER The most destructive, killing force in the world is called in human experiences loneliness. It is not merely the absence of love in our lives, but it is the gnawing hunger that knows only the love of another can drive away such isolation. For God created us out of love to share His love in wholeness. Such wholeness, however, can never be attained in isolation. It is in a community of love that we become healed of what can destroy us. W 6 Yet God loves you and me infinitely. If were to experience A His love daily as triune, indwelling presence, emptying the love of Father and Son and Holy Spirit into our hearts at all times, how could we ever again live in loneliness? I am convinced that the basic sin of all sins is to deny the workings of the Holy Spirit that God,and therefore other human persons, can and do love us. Yet in all our absorptions, this one root-sin,our loneliness,is that from which we seek by plays of power to extricate ourselves. But this only leads us ...

LOVE INCARNATE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1985

LOVE INCARNATE We read that God so loved us as to give us His only begotten Son so that we might have eternal life (Jn 3:16). He sent His prophets to tell us of His emptying love for His people. He insisted that He is Raphael, the one who heals (Ex 15:26). "I have loved you with an everlasting love,so I am constant in my affection for you" (Jr 31:3). But His people,as you and I do,doubted and even rejected this perfect love. But love is emptying and so God's Word emptied Himself of what He held from all eternity equal with the Father in order to take upon Himself the form of a suffering servant on our behalf (Ph 2:9).1n such weakness and suffering on the cross Jesus becomes the perfect image of the invisible God (Col 1:15). We have no other way of knowing the Father's love and to receive it but through the Word made flesh. Throughout His whole public life Jesus went about doing good, especially in the form of healing all types of sicknesses and diseases. He is never more the perfect ...

POWER OF LOVE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1985

POWER OF LOVE For too long we have used the miracles and healings of Jesus in an apologetic way to prove that He was divine because only a divine nature could perform such works. While Jesus did appeal to His works as a sign of His credentials, yet He was always reticent about His power to heal. His great work was to become the fullness of God's communicating, loving presence to mankind. He could not be side-tracked by any vain glory as a miracle worker or healer. He would heal the world by becoming the full manifestion of the Heavenly Father's love for each human being. Yet because He was so much one with His Father, seeing the maimed, the blind, the lepers and the paralytics, the epileptics and the possessed, the sinner bound by hatred for others,by lust and pride,He, k as it were, could not be side-traced by any vain glory as a miracle worker but rather as the sheer compassionate, infinite mercy and love of His Father for all His children. Because His Father was a loving Father,concerne...

HEALTH [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1985

HEALTH It was the whole person, body, soul and spirit (1 Th s:23),that spoke to the merciful Jesus. His name,Jesus, means: Yahweh who saves. But in Hebrew to save describes the bringing of the fullness of happiness, joy and peace, total health as the result of living a full, good life under God's protection and within His holy will. Salvation or redemption, both in the Old and the New Testament, there fore, implies a total saving and healing of man and woman by the Savior,Jesus Christ, who possesses the healing power to restore them to the state of children of God and make them grow into the ever fuller participation of God's eternal life.

A LIVING FAITH [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1985

A LIVING FAITH God,through Jesus Christ, wants all of us to enjoy total health in all our body, soul and spirit relationships. And,yet,in our Lord's lifetime,in His teaching and actual healing of the sick and the broken and the sinful,as well as now through His Church,Jesus Christ demanded two elements for healing. The first element present and so often emphasized by Jesus is the need of believing in His power and love to heal the sick persons encountered. He asks the blind Bartimaeus: "What do you want me to do for you?...Go,your faith has saved you" (Mk 10:51-52). So with the woman with a hemorrhage and the leper (Mk 5:34; Lk 17:19). The importance of a living faith is given us in Jesus' teaching: Have faith in God. I tell you solemnly,if anyone says to this mountain,'Get up and throw yourself into the sea,' with no hesitation in his heart, but believing that what he says will happen,it will be done for him. I tell you therefore: everything you ask and pray for, believe that you have ...

A SURRENDERING FAITH [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1985

A SURRENDERING FAITH But the second element that Jesus insists upon along with a deep faith in His power to heal all sicknesses is to turn one's life over completely to the dominion of Jesus Christ. We were to believe without any doubt in our faith that what we are asking for will be given as we believe. But in that same text He insists that we surrender our lives to Him. Wa are to live by His. Spirit of love and forgiveness. "And when you stand in prayer, forgive whatever you have against anybody,so that your Father in heaven may forgive your failings too" (Mk 11:25). Our sinful natures in the majority of cases,as medical experts point out, when the psyche is not in proper relationship with God,are the causes of many psychosomatic disturbances. Some doctors believe that 70 to 75% of our physical ills are caused or serious aggravated by psyche disturbances. And Dr. Carl Jung maintained that he never found a person with a psychotic problem that did not have at the basis of the mental di...

A CONCERNED, LOVING FATHER [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1985

A CONCERNED, LOVING FATHER Jesus was telling them that on all levels the Heavenly Father was concerned and wanted them to be healthy,if they would yield to that inner divine power locked within them. The secret of Jesus' healing power lies in the fact that He perfectly imaged the Heavenly Father for each sick person who met Him. In the love that He poured out in each look and touch and word,He was calling the sick unto the healing love of God. His Spirit of Love allows us to see and experience His presence as the Father's love, living within us and He calls us into healing unto abundant life. As we are healed on all levels:spirit, soul and body relationships,we are called out to be channels of God's healing love to each person we meet. It is God's love in us that heals us and allows others to be healed by our touch, our look, our word. Therefore,Christian healers are occasions to draw out the love of God within the lives of those seeking healing. This is why such healers should educate ...

VARIOUS TYPES OF HEALING [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1985

VARIOUS TYPES OF HEALING We human beings are made up,not so much of three parts, distinct and separable:body, soul and spirit; but we are constituted fully alive human beings by healthy, harmonious relationships on these levels of body, soul and spirit. We are all experienced in the first type of healing: the physical. We have seen our bodies heal themselves from cuts and bruises, arm themselves against the virus, and through rest and diet be healed. We have received medication from physicians and have been healed through surgery or the mending arts of a surgeon. We can also receive physical healing in prayer alone or in a group. In receiving the Church's sacraments there can also be physical healings.

PSYCHIC HEALING [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1985

PSYCHIC HEALING Much talk and writing concern the second type of healing. God has revealed much about the workings of the human psyche through the discoveries made in depth-psychology and psychotherapy. If we are to attain an integrated personality,to harmonize all the various levels of psychic life within our mind (Carl Jung calls this process individuation),the upper levels of the conscious part of the psyche must be harmonized and healed with the lower layers of the unconscious. This means that in a prayerful attitude the lower layers must be opened up to the scrutiny of the conscousness. We will always remain crippled psychically and will be victims of the primordial factors in our lives and past hurt memories unless we open up these lower layers to inner healing. The late Ruth Carter Stapleton had developed a prayerful technique of inner healing of memories that is similar to those used by Catholic "healers" in the healing of psychic hurts. She describes her method: When we pra...

HEALING OF MEMORIES [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1985

HEALING OF MEMORIES Usually in psychic healing of memories, a leader leads the group or an individual back into the past, suggesting periods of one's life when hurts developed and angry moods, resentment toward certain persons, poisoned relationships, unforgiveness have been festering the heart for many years. Without any undue fear or guilt, each individual calls down the healing power of the Spirit of Jesus to touch this or that relationship or scarred memory and bring it into anew vision of love and forgiveness. Such inner healing requires 1) a prayerful setting; 2)sufficient time to do the exercise properly; and 3)all efforts must be taken to avoid any hysteria or the promotion of greater fear. Great healings can take place in the healing aspect of the Rite of Reconciliation, both if the priest is willing to cooperate and has the time and if the penitent property'^fiSnself /herself to the presence of the Healing Christ.

SPIRITUAL HEALING [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1985

SPIRITUAL HEALING The last type of healing is spiritual healing. It is the healing of our relationship with God on the spirit-to-Spirit level. It usually concerns a conversion away from a self-centered sinful world to a Godcentered one. If so many of our physical ills are centered in a disturbed psyche,is it so farfetched to find that our psyches are disturbed mainly because we are not right with God? All of us should be aware of hoc? much in need of spiritual healings we are. We fail to live up to our conscience. With St. Paul we can cry out:"...but I am unspiritual; I have been sold as a slave to sin. I cannot understand my own behavior. I fail to carry out the things I want to do,and I find myself doing the very things I hate" (Rm 7:14-16). Jesus Christ dwells within us. He heals us through the release of His Holy Spirit who abounds in our hearts through the love He gives us (Rm 5:5). He makes it possible through His infused gifts of faith, hope and love that we can experience in ...

DOING OUR PART [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1985

DOING OUR PART Such healing must be an on-going process of continually meeting God's love in prayerful communion. Hence the necessity of asceticism to purify our lives of inordinate attachments to any bodily, psychic or spiritual good as well as the positive development of Christ-like virtues as we put on the mind of Christ. We see the necessity of the asceticism of prayer,of stilling our hearts so that God may speak His Word with absolute authority in our lives. The greatest spiritual healing comes in our repentant hearts when we can forgive others as God has forgiven us. Much of our spiritual healing and also healing on the psychic and physical levels take place in the reception of the sacraments with the proper dispositions. We already mentioned the sacrament of Reconciliation as the occasion for opening ourselves to the deepest levels of our consciousness and even our unconscious and there experiencing the healing power of the Divine Physician. The peak of all Christian healing,e...

A PRAYERFUL ENCOUNTER [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1985

A PRAYERFUL ENCOUNTER But,above all, if you have progressed in your prayer life beyond "talking" to God outside of you and have begun to enter into an inner silence, you know the power of healing that comes to you when you reach that state of complete self-surrender to the indwelling Trinity. Jesus promised us that He and the Father would come and abide within us (Jn 14:23). At the center of our being,we can still fall down and confess our belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. We can cry out to Him that we are broken in body, soul and spirit. We believe He can heal us as He healed those sick 2,000 years ago. As you learn to yield to His healing love, you accept God's perfect love for you. Fears disappear from your consciousness. Peace like the soft rain falling on the desert ground releases new powers within you. Christ is your Good Shepherd. Whom shall you fear? You can feel in such deep encounters with the indwelling Lord new power to love God, yourself, your neighbors, the entir...

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: May the mercies of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit be always with you! pp. : -qq Easter with all its freshness of new spring-life is celebrated this month of April. How our hearts thrill as we enter into the beautiful Easter liturgies and experience, after a long Lent spent in prayer and fasting for healing and forgiveness of our selfishness, anew life in the risen Christ. "Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death and granting life to those in the tomb!" This is the triumphant shout of His victory over sin and death to be glorified by His Father as the "new Adam." Now He who was dead is alive and holds the keys of the kingdom of death (Rev 1.18). And now each year we,too, can hopefully celebrate our shared victory with Christ over sin and death in our lives. I have chosen as the teaching for this month the beautiful feast of the Ascension. Perhaps we can enter into the symbols...
