After tin* Force Hill and its attendant horrors* t ho speakers last fall were most vigorous in their denunciation of the reckless waste of money in paying fraudulent pension to bums, bounty juuii>ers nnd other thieves, a IHjliey inaugurated, encouraged and sustained by the Republican party, who thus controlled thousands of votes principally at the expense of the South and West. As the peusiou list wjig intended as a roll of honor the action of the present goveriuent officials in purging it of frauds iscommended by all good citizeus in which even the members of the (irand Army of the Republic join. FRIDAY. JUNE 1?, UKVrr A WKItllKK. Publlithvr*. NEITHER SAFE NOR HABITABLE. During the recent commencement exercises of the public schools, Roanoke College and Salem Female Seminary, dozens of friends and relatives of the pupils were unable to gain admittance, whilst those who did were most uncomfortably and dangerously packed in the building, for had there been a cry of lire or any other, causing a stampede, many lives must have been lost. A]>art from that the hall is dingy, dirty and dilapidated, with a seating capacity of less than ten per cent of the population of the town. The writer during the past week or two, heard the complaints of many citizens, mostly taxpayers and all denounced the very questionable i?olicy of the council in not renovating, enlarging and improving the hall,so that instead of be ing a disgrace to the town, as it now is, it might be a credit.
