A Mnlilen'« Philosophy. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 3 December 1853

A Mnlilen'« Philosophy. A youth came a wooing a maiden so fair, As gentla and true as a dorp, J To his words of affection she'd always reply In tremulous accents of Jove. When the hour drew near for tbis swain to depart, lie kissed her and bade her good night, She kissed in return and thought It no barm, But ma said she'd not acted right. ' "Then why, dear ma," she exclaimed, "have you said Tbis doctrino is holy and true: To do unto all men, in every respect, As you'd wish them to do unto you." i "But if of ray favors too lavish I've been, 1 ' She said in half petulent sorrow, ' I'm sure that my lore will with pleasurE return My kiss back again on to-morrow." •'You know that my Bible with profit I've read, And its doctrines I firmly believe, And there it is written in characters plain, " 'Tia more blest to give than receive.' Investigation, however, has satisfied the Secretary of the Navy that the government is still without title to tho portion of the island most required, if not to the whole of it, and he now requests the Governor "at tho earliest practicable moment, to invito lite attention of the Lngislaturo to this subject, in order that proper acts may 1 be patted ceding jurisdiction and relinquishing title, to Maro Island. 1 ' These communications are of great importance, at this lime, to tho State or California. 1 ha Attorney General affirms, n<? it will be Keen, tho title of the State "to all the...

These islands are about 3.300 miles west of the Hawaiian, group, 1.100 east of Fou-Chou, and 700 miles south of Yedo. Tho ■ observations are in general, correct, though we , think that the British government will not object to the sale. i The Bonin islands occupy the samo position in regard to the Japanese empire which the , Bermudas occupy in re;', ird to the United States. Insignificant in number, size, and pro* ; ductions, the.se islands are important, because they command to a cor lain extent, the sea of Japan. Removal of (lie Capital. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 3 December 1853

Removal of (lie Capital. Some of the papors above, for some time past, have been urging the removal of the capital, from Benicia, its present resting place. We cannot perceive what benefit the State is to derive from this annual migration. It is asserted that each removal has cost the State somo three hundred thousand dollars. The capital has been removed four times—first from San Jose to V.illejo, then to Saoramonto, then to Vallejo, and last to Benicia, where it is well enough to be let alone. Benicia is easy of access, and even if the accommodations bo not exactly what is required, the State offices are ! there, and every body in the State knows it; and there they had better remain, at least until the expense of placing them there is settled for. The State, ono would think, has been fooled often enough by the brilliant offers of cities and individuals, to learn wisdom from experience, and to let the speculators alone. If the capital is to continuo its wanderings, it is hardly fai...
