(Correspondence oflhe. Catifornian.) [Newspaper Article] — Californian — 12 April 1848

( Correspondence oflhe. Catifornian. ) Monterey, California, March 30. ii': Mr. Editpr. : — We are in these diggens what you would term poor anil jnrl, timed are as dull as a pewter bell. The good "Id Governor has been retrenching the expenses of the military and the fountain head of tho golden fountain being stopped has left the. glittering .stream lo dry up, and vessels dealing in .California shin plasters f^httllock hides) have brought that stock 60 per cent, below pnr, these combined has made Plata scarce, scarcer, scarcest. Many of the small affairs in the rum line (thank God) have been .forced to .close for the want of custom, and it is amusing to sec those ex-hand lera of the bottle and glass driving ox-teams, digging wells, etc. ' As tight as things arc, the improvements in the way of building are still going on, but I run sorry /to sny. that they partake most too much of the western mode of architecture to be .substantial — from present appearance 1 hope to sec several larg...

THE DIGNITY OF LABOR [Newspaper Article] — Californian — 12 April 1848

THE DIGNITY OF LABOR "Hiere is no suter mark p( the progress of any people to the arts and Sciences of civilised file, than the estimation in which labor v held among them. ; in the ruder stages of jSociety, personal prowess and physical vigor constitute the standard of worth. As civilization ad- | ranees, skill in; arms and martial accom- j plishments, becopie the cliief rccominenda- ; tions to honor arid distinction ; and finally. j the march of mind through a multitude of j agencies, the chief of wht^ii is the press, es- i tablishes tiie great truth., that excellence consists alone m combination of mental power and moral virtue. It may provoke a smile to thiok that mero physical power should hare ere? been the *n«?asure of a man, and that his character should have been estimated by the .dumber of pounds he could lift, the distance; he could jump, or the force with which he couUi hurl a stone. Vet notions far more ridiculous, ?f possible, prevail ct the present day. How many young...

Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Californian — 19 April 1848

A correspondent of the Boston Courier mokes the following forcible remark : —I never see a rich man denying himself the comforts of life, and starving, night and duy, to add to his riches, but the picture of a jackass, with a pair of panniers on his back, rises to mv mind, and, in my mind's eye, I sco him groping, with his nose in the gutter, fishing up garbage, and twisting his crooked neck to deposit it in his basket, nnd continuing to do so until ho sinks under the load and rots beneath it. ¶ Etherial Honey.—An ingenious Frenchman has discovered that, by administering ether to a hive of bees, he can deprive them of consciousness, and remove their honey, without dread of their stings. It is to be hoped that no clever burglars may find a similar method of robbing houses ! lcj"Our •overland Mail for the United Stairs will positivchj close on Thursday the w JT//i day of April, {present month.) FROM OREGON, [Newspaper Article] — Californian — 19 April 1848

FROM OREGON, l>v the arrival of the brig Henry, Capt. Kilborn, 'J3 days from Columbia River, we hive received files of the Oregon Spectator, from Oct. 28th, to March 9th inclusive, from which we glean the following interesting items respecting the Indian difficulties in that Territory. Immediately oh the receipt of the news of the mas-acre of Dr. Whitman's family, at Fort Vancouver, I. S. Og.den, Esq., H. 15. Go. 'a Chief Factor, started immediately for the Doctor's elation, with lb' men, in order to rescue the unfortunate survivors, who were understood to be in captivity amongst the Indians. He reached the scene of action on the 12th of December and succeeded in effecting his humane object, and returning safe!) to Vancouver, with 69 persons, mostly women and children, rescued from a very perilous situation, as the Indians were still much incensed against the whites, and would soon have sacrificed all those in their power. The number of persons killed at the massacre, is ...
