The Brand February 91995 6 Features r Standing Firm by Andrew Boss .JVU: -ViAJ '' l 3n i njn Why arc you here at H-SU? What arc your reasons for com- ing to college? I know several people who ask themselves these questions weekly. Maybe you have wondered this yourself. Do not fret you arc not alone. This seems to be a question that fre- quents college campuses across the country and perplexes many pursuers of higher education. Students come to college for various reasons. Some to get out of the house some to please their parents some to get away from their hometown and (believe it or not) some people actually come to college to get a degree. Dude what a concept! Although not everyone has their life mapped out I think by your junior year you should have an idea of what direction you are going (unlike someone I know very well). I do not mean that you must know exactly what career you will go into or what company you will work with. It just seems as though this "jour- ney" should be ov...

When eight local alumni came forward to help get the sorority going again and take the interested women through the pledging process most of them expected only about fifteen women to rush. But they got quite a surprise! Sixty-eight women decided to rush Epsilon Pi Alpha. At first they were ecstatic until they realized that even though they wanted to give a bid to every woman who showed interest there were just too few of them to be able to han- dle such a large group. So with heavy hearts they gave bids to only thirty-five women and are now in the process of guilding the twenty-nine who accepted. Clinton and the Democratic leadership vow that they will battle fiercly to keep the ban. Conservatives see the ban as only the beginning of the liberal's quest for total gun control and believe the ban to be uncon- stitutional. Liberals argue that only police should have guns and believe gun control will lower the crime rate. Please elaborate on how you feel about both the assault weapons ban and about gun control in general. BviaHI I believe that total gun control will not lower crime. The Bnmi February 16 1995 Viewpoint 3 Standing Firmly in Reality Wouldn't it be nice to live in a world of certainty where all of our questions were met with immediate answers? Where our lives were painted in stark blacks and dazzling whites? Where finding out what to do with our lives was as simple as going to church twice a week and following the pastor's three step plan to a fulfilling life? And as iong as we are at it where there was racial harmony no world hunger and the skies were not cloudy all day? I sometimes dream of this place but a funny thing always hap- pens when I do I wake up to reality. In my world absolute cer tainty is generally a precursor to a humbling fall I sometimes cannot see for all the gray and the three steps in most 'plans are three steps backward. Yet some people continue to live in a dream-world adamantly insist" ing that the best course of action for any true Christian is to close his or her eyes to reality and do the same. If you don't have cer- tain...

For Mr. Hughey a junior the end of college is in his sights at least as far as elawes go. But alas at this esteemed university there is a stum- bling block to the best laid plans of mice and men. Namely the oppressive requirement to attend 80 chapels before graduating. He started off well enough with the absurd enthusiasm common to first semester freshmen. Lately however his attendance record has been less than spectacular as the demands of graduate level classes and paying the bills have caught up to him. This year he has averaged one chapel per semester. It has afforded him the luxury of sleep a rare and valuable commodity on any campus. The drawback is that on his current pace it will take him 27 more years to graduate. In compari- son Mike Tyson .will serve at most eight years for rape. O J. Simpson will s...

It's the searching longing cry of culture and in fact a world in crisis. Where is the hope? Where is the peace? Where is the purpose and mean- ing for life here in the real world? The answer lies beyond the reaches of governmental policies and great humanitarian efforts as needed and as good as these may be. It lies in a lowly manger a cruel cross and an empty tomb. For it is here that we see the king- dom of heaven bursting onto the scene of what has often been called the 'real world.' It is a shining kingdom that reaches into the darkest comers of every mind. I can see all obstacles in my way. Gone are the cloudy days that had me down. It's gonna be a bright bright sun- shiny day." If you have ever lis- tened to this song in its entirety it actually has a good message. I feel that as Christians even though this is not a Christian song we can apply this to our lives. Sometimes it does seem as though we are going through a cloudy day and that we will never see the sun again. Although this is a literal translation we can look at it in a different light (no pun intended). Christ is our light in this world. He helps us see life in a different way. The clouds can be trials or tribulations that we face each day. These trials are things that we come into contact with . that make us grow stronger in our faith. A...

Dishes Up an Evening of Entertainment in The Dining Room by Andrew Boss The Dining Room the most recent stage production of the HSU Department of Theatre promises to be a worthwhile way to spend an evening. The produc- tion written by A. R. Gurney presents the uniqueness of WASP families in the Northeast The actors present a truly remarkable show even though some are in their first stage production. The entire play takes place in a dining room with several of the scenes overlapping each other. When I saw this play I was con- fused at first about some of the characters. Finally I realized that each cast member plays several people and the scenes must be viewed as separate occurrences. So when you go see this remem- ber to pay attention to the charac- ter not necessarily the actor por- traying him or her.
