ENGLISH AND FRENCH COLONIES. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 7 December 1883

ENLUUSR AND FRENOI COLONIES. It has been well remnrked that the best way of disposing of French nspir ations for a national Empire is to cons pare Froench distant possessions with the B1itish, in their imumediate seig bourhood. A comparison between Rcunion anul Mauritius, Saigon and Hong Kong, Now Onleconia and 4?u tralia, must at once prove that the FreIlch have no real colonising gifts. F'C, one of our latest acquisitions,. has already distanced New Caledonia. - Yet the intrinsic. merits of these French territories are great. They. contain rich eleimentst. natural gifts of soil and climate which enterprise and. determi nation" ought' to speedily, develop. This exeuse, however, cannot be used for ever and it most eertainlytwill not apply to the case of Bishop Loyal. We may grant that he was an exeellent man and an admirable bishop. The Vicissitudes of Life. AN ANGLO AUSTRALIAN TALE. ORIGINAL. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 14 December 1883

AN ANGLO AUSTRALIAN TALE. (aitr aVN trE.) ORIGINAL. Truth is strangs-stranger than iction to quote the ancient aiom--and if aught in my story shonid bring asglnst it the charge of being sessational, truth muet Iseac the burden, as all the loidents of my story have really occurred. In one of England's busy cities lived the family of John Robinson,"IHelet Jack." as he was frequently callel on account of his uprightness of conduct, had a large family. lie had been blessed like the happy man of whom the royal psalmist speaks, by iaving his quiver full of Olive hranchesl, ill wife had been for some years deal when my story opens, and his sont and danuhters were almost all grown into mhnhod aund woman hood thoeldestonesmarried and settlel cem fortably, the two younuget only rom.tline at school. My story, however, has but little to do with the family chieflr relating to tlina. beth, or Lislle, as she was usaolly called, the fourth daughter of Jack. AN EXTRAORDINARY RELIGION. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 14 December 1883

AN EXTRAORDINARY RE LIGION. Mr. James Parton has recently been enlightening the Nineteenth Ceptury Club of Neow York by his views as to the future religion. of. Americans. Here is the conclusion of hise dis course: "Religion hak to carry sucha load of obsolete belief that it no longer has any regenerating power over the educated classes. 'The coming man will heave a theory of the universe but his religion will not. He will regard-the subject as secular. Above all he will ihsist that no theory of the universe and no other conviotiou of the mind can have in it any moral quality whatever, can be honorable or obious, right or wrong. The proper religion for an American citizen is the United States of America -the sublime experiment of freedom and equality-the beat hope of the human race. Let us stand by it and live for it. To be a good American that will be the coming man's religion aye, though he may never have the previlege of treading these shores; to be a good aristocrat, lord of our...

NILLUMBIK. BANQUET TO THE MINISTRY. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 14 December 1883

NILhLUMfII K. BANQURT TO. THE MINISTRY. A complimentary banquet was of fored to the Minisery, represented by the Hon."D. Gillies, on the occasion of his visit on Saturday, 8th inst. Precisely at 11 oelock the hon. gentleman, accompanied by our valled ruember, Mr. Cameron, drove up tothe Institute, where he was received by about 25 of the leading ro.idents. As time was precious, Mr. Gillies having to be in town early in the afternoon, advantage was taken to bring under the Minister's notice several of the local wants; A deputation waited upon him, introduced by Mr. Cameron. Their first requirement was that a resident constable should be stationed here without delay. This was urged upon the Minister by our representa tive, and supported by Mr. Bill, backedd up by sundry statistics gathered by him. The next was the extension of the telegraph to Nillunmbik. The railway,. of course, came in for a large share of attention, Mr. Peers advocating its extension over the mountains, in order to...
