CHAPTER XIII. Confession. [Newspaper Article] — The Urana Independent and Clear Hills Standard — 15 August 1913

CHAPTER. XIII. . Confession. I Paralysed by extreme fright, Mrs. Beatson stood as motionless as a stone image, staring blankly at her captors with open mouth and unwink ing eyes. Her face was whiter than ;the dingy parchment o£ which she had been deprived, and; her breath came and„went in short quick gasps, which echoed audibly through the still night. Rupert looked at her for a motnent and then turned away his head; his manhood was shamed by the silent agony of the miserable creature. Carrington, more1 hardened by experience, stooped to the light, and read. "This 1b the Last Will and Testament o£ John Hendle," in vivid ly black Latin lettering. That was enough to assure him of the truth, and, rolling up the parchment, he turned sternly on: the panic-stricken woman; "You are a clever fool, Mrs. Beat son," he remarked quietly-—"clever in getting the will and hiding it so skil fully; but a fool to examine so com promising a document here, when the village policeman may pass at any mom...

DON'T OVERDO IT. [Newspaper Article] — The Urana Independent and Clear Hills Standard — 15 August 1913

DON'T OVERDO IT. Nothing bo quickly defaces and maltea the human structure repellant as overdoing in, any direction, and if there is one word that should he ever before the girl who would always re-' main young it is 'moderation." Overduing in any direction means prostration, and the woman who feels that her nerves are getting the best of her is.losing her best hold on youth. She is making a bid for that form of age that has nothing to do with the count of years, but that expresses itself in the peevish frowns that so soon, make a face uninviting, and that leave lines on the face that are warn ings to would-be friends. The truth is that the youth which remains in spite of time's stress is a reward for a life lived in accordance with the scientific laws that rule the universe, and are so closely akin to the laws of truth and justice.
