ACCIDENT.-Three men-. working at the Wild Duck Reef, met with a serious accident on Friday last. It appears they were en- gaged tamping a hole they had previously bored for the purpose of blasting. STANDING ORDERS. [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 10 June 1864

iSTANDInE ODERas.-3Members of the Heathcote Road Board have often " moved the suspension of the standing orders," but it appears they cannot suspend Roberts' ob struction, or move his fence, which has become one of the standing orders of the Board. At the next meeting of the Board the subject will be brought forward for the fortieth time, when the Clerkwill be reaues ted to ask M1r. Roberts why the fence has not been m-ved; a reply will be received at the following meeting, to the effect that Mr. Roberts " cannot see it." The Engineer will again be instructed to employ someone to remove the fence. At the meeting of the Board following, the Engineer will report that he employed some man to remove the fence, but he became afraid of Roberts, and left the job. After this the fence or stand ing order will be allowed to stand over till next year, until 3r. Freeman and Roberts fall out, when the subject will again have a run. SATAN'S VISIT TO HEATHCOTE. (Another way of saying the same thing.) [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 10 June 1864

SATAN'S VISIT TO KEATHCOTE. (Another wec of saying the same thing.) Not many years have passed away, Since Heathcote was with people gay, And money passed from hand to hand, As each could riches then command. 'Twas then that Satan, seeing it thus, Had determined to pay a visit to us; And 'mongst the numbers of reckless men, He thought he should discover then, A few whom he could lead to crime, And make them his througoat all time. No sooner thought than carried out He came-and by it brought about A visible change in the people here, A change which many had cause to fear. At the time of his visit there liv'd then, One-disliked by most men- In whose features could be seen, Traces of all that is base and mean. Satan at once this man assailed, For with such men he never failed ; And thus, to tempt him, fill'd his mind With thoughts of wealth and sin combin'd, And before him laid a plan by which He could prosper and grow rich. Satan had not misjudg'd his man, For he at once took in the p...

A NEW MOTIVE POWER. [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 10 June 1864

A NEW MOTIVE POWER.-We were admitted on Monday to a private view, at the Crystal Palace, of a machine by which it is hoped to introduce a principle into locomotion. The invention comes to us from France, and is due to the ingenuity of a commercial gentleman of AMeaux (Seine et Marne), M. Casimir Noel. The principle is not new, l5aing already to some extent developed in the veloipede, and in the well-known action of the lathe in machinery. Some twenty years ago, more over, the visitors at the Adelaide Gallery saw a similar application of motive power in the centrifugal railway. M. Noel seems to have given a more practical character to the abstract idea. The velocipede is a mere toy, and the centrifugal railway was an impossibility for any of the serious pur poses of locomotion. But the machine which we saw at work on Monday appears to he capable of being usefully applied in various ways. A car has been constructed which will move either with or without rails to go upon (though of cou...
