MELBOURNE. December 6. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 11 December 1872

MELBOURNE. (FflOM OUll 0\VN CORRESPONDENT.) December 6. The Ministry hav*? had altogether a most fortunate run of good luck while they have been in office, their measures having been met in both Houses, especially the lower, with but slight opposition. The Education Bill has, of coui'se, been the trial of strength, the result of which, when it passed the Council, plainly exhibited that the Government had maintained the leading features of this, their most important measure in legislating for the country. In the Council it was anticipated, as I have before mentioned, the Government would meet with greater opposition, as that chamber has earned for itself an unenviable character for retarding, if not endeavouring to retrogade in legislation. But there remained olie cbance, which I have previously pointed out, that they would act cautiously, as if the bill was turned out the Ministry would un doubtedly go to the country with a most popular cause of complaint against the 'Upprr House th...

ItEVIEW. .ur. iieanay has just issued a new medical Work entitled ' Constitutional Syphilis,' through Mr Bailliere, publisher, of Melbourne, the printers, Messrs. Mason and Firth, have done their part in a highly creditable manner. Mr Beaney's work is one to make a severe impression on the minds of all who desire to see our communities with healthy minds in healthy bodies. From the extremely subtle nature oi the disease trented no nnn is siifn from contamination — from instances given by Dr. Beanev he:ilth\' little children are affected through drinking from the 5atne cup with other children who inherit the disease from their parents j others catch from being kissed; nurses become its victims through suckling such children ; and what is worthy of the at tention of legislatures is the assertion that this awful scourge is transmitted by vaccination, so plain is this made and so regardless are some public vaccinators of the history of the parents of the child from which they take the v...

It seems to lie very uncertain as to how long Mr Parkes' Ministry can retain office in the face of the present state of parties in the As sembly. The House is to a great extent cut up into small sections or coteries each having peculiar views of its own as to what is best for the country. Tiie Assembly is very much like the besieged town, in fable, each section j thereof declares that they have discovered, and \ they only, the panacea for all the ills the i country is enduring. The general prosperity has not brought with it any increased gener osity, even among the leaders of the Assembly from whom we expected an example in this respect that Iheir adherents might well be in duced to follow. Many ot tbe chiefs exhibit a shortness o/ temper — a want of proper reti cence—an absence of dignity, ixiucli to be lamented. Even Mr Parkes, who having generally borne the character of being slow to anger; reasonably forbearing, has shot out a large amount of ill-feeling in debate. Ina recent sp...
