Family Notices [Newspaper Article] — The Independent — 23 October 1914

THE Benalla Independent. Published on Tuesdays and Fridays "Stands close to all But leans on none." FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1914. The Death Sentence. The callous, apparently indifferent j attitude of young Einsporn when his Honor Mr Justice Hodges pro nounced the dread sentence of death upon him at the Supreme Court on Wednesday was simply appalling. The sileuce that fell upon the Court as the accused, leaning In a nonchalant, lackadaisical way over the railing of the dock, could be felt. But the least concerned of all was the able-bodied young murdei er who had been found guilty of, the terrible crime of shooting his father. Murder is a fearful thing under any circumstances, but when this case is looked.into it presents features that will puzzle the most profound thinkers physiologically. The evidence was practically barren of motive, and yet Einsporn, after warning the family of his devilish intention, deliberately rides into Euroa and obtains the weapon of death. Conscience exerted n...

Pure Foods Act. [Newspaper Article] — The Independent — 23 October 1914

Pure Foods Act. It must have, appealed to many what a peculiar sort of " hass" is the law occasionally. Take the Pure Foods Aci-. Any shop, no matter how well-conducted, may through no fault in management be held liable for some fault that pos sibly had its origin elsewhere, and over which the vendor had not the slightest control. Of course where culpable negligence or gross care lessness can be sheeted home to a vendor in the matter of the people's food supply then he deserves the full weight of the law against him. But in some cases we have heard in Benalla it appeared as if the manufacturer could escape scot free while the local mau has to " carry the infant" in the shap^ of loss of business and the inevitabe sus picion that naturally arises iu the public mind. The atmosphere, the general surroundings (that may be due to the laxity of the Health au thorities) may give rise to a set of conditions that will produce ill effects in any packet, bottle, &o. opened for human con...

The Non-Advertiser. [Newspaper Article] — The Independent — 23 October 1914

The Non-Advertiser. Breathes there a-Man with soul so dead Who never to himself bath said: "My trade of lnte is getting bad, I'll try another two-inch ad." If such there be, go murk him well, For him no bank account shall swell, No angel walcli the golden stair To welcome him a millionaire; The man who never asks for trade, By local lines or ad. displayed, Cares more for rest than worldly gain And patronage must give him pain. Tread lightly, riends let no rude sound Disturb his solitude profound. Here let him live in calm repose, Onsought by men except he owes, And when hedies, go plant him deep, That naughtmay break his dreamless sleep, Where no rude clamor may dispel The quiet that he loved so well, And that the world may know its loss, Place on his grave a wreath of moss; And on a stone above, "Here lies A chump who wouldn't advertise."
