WEDDING. [Newspaper Article] — Adelong and Tumut Express and Tumbarumba Post — 17 July 1900

WEDDING. A quiet but very pretty wedding was celebrated on Monday the 9th, the con- tracting parties being Mr. Thomas   Davis (brother of Mr. Davis of Gil- more) and Miss Elizabeth Guy, eldest daughter of Mr. T. Guy, of Camp- street, Adelong. The marriage cere- mony was performed at the residence of the bride's parents, by the Rev. E. J. Spencer. The bride, who was given   away by her father, was elegantly attired in a costume of white silk, prettily trimmed with satin ribbon, silk, chiffon, and sprays of orange blossoms ; the usual long tulle veil and wreath of orange blossom's com- pleting her toilette. She carried a lovely shower bouquet of snow white blossoms, and wore a handsome gold brooch—the gift of the bridegroom. The bridesmaid, Miss L. Guy (sister of the bride, was attractively gowned in cream silk, nicely trimmed with cream lace and ribbon ; brown velvet hat, having a garniture of cream   feathers. She carried a nice bouquet, and he...

0LI.A POlMDA. There's a chiol aiming yo takin1 notes, And faith he'll urcnt 'em. (By 'The Man About Town.') The Hospital Ball is a thing of the past. Notwithstanding splendid organ isation, complete arrangements, and strict attention to ovorv detail, tho clerk of the -weather saw fit to deluge onr fair land - on . that auspicious oc casion. The juvenilo portion of tho community fared somewhat better tb.au the adults, but tho opportunity was seized by a goodly numbor of tho disappointed lovers of Terpsichore to worship after supper the folloAving night. JA' MAN'S; VOICE. ClIAPTER XI. Dn. Leigh's' ]-at\ont was, as he found on his voturu to her, in anything but a .satisfactory state. She 'seemed 16 bis straggling with thoughts and memories which oppressed and overwhelmed her ; yet sho, tried, with n, remarkable strength of will, . to master the agony of her mind, though the effort, in her present weak state, was terrible. OUR OPEN COLUMN., The Progress Committee Election. (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — Adelong and Tumut Express and Tumbarumba Post — 20 July 1900

OUR OPEN COLUMN. The Progress Committee Election. (To the Eduor.) Sm)_ Will you kindly giant me space to point out some megulautiesin con nection with tho above election. If, as vour lenort states, 60 people 10 coided their choice, theie must have been GO ballot papeis in the box, each papeu showing 13 votes This would toU 780 The figures you publish opposite , each oi tho 27 candidates' names total (including one informal papor) '737, leaving 48 votes unaccounted for. As this can be easily scon by lefeience to the figiues, it is needless for me to ?wute further than o\piossing the opinion that a lecount should bo made, if the ballot papeis aio not destioyed If they aie, -then afresh election should bo held, as thejie, is no leason foi doubting the accuracy of your lepoit. Another matter, which I think should be condemned, is the 'bunching' business, which debtioys the com mittee's repiesentative chaiacter, as it only repiesents the cliques which woiks the ' bunch,' and the effect i...

" Drunk with Bigotry." [Newspaper Article] — Adelong and Tumut Express and Tumbarumba Post — 20 July 1900

' Drunk with Bigotry.' A mild ' scene' occurred a few days lack during a sitting of the Legisla tive Assembly in Sydney over certain remarks made at the annual Orange gathering, on the 12fch inst., by one hon. member (Mr. Jessep), who was accused of referring to the Premier (Sir Wm. Lyne) in a derogatory manner in a speech made at the cele bration referred to; Politics — always a dangerous tbemo at certain assemb lages — it appears, were brought for ward by several speakers, and discussed at what is usually a convivial gather ing, which was, i£ nothing else, not in the' best of taste. During the resultant explanations in |he Legislative As sembly several heated remarks were made, and among the interjections levelled at Mr. Jessep was one made by the our member (Mr. E. Donald son), who ejaculated that, when Mr. Jessep spoke at the Orange meeting, he was ' drunk with bigotry.1' These Old World politico-cum-secfcarian differences appear to be dying hard even in Australia', where attemp...

FROM THE FRONT. [Newspaper Article] — Adelong and Tumut Express and Tumbarumba Post — 20 July 1900

FROM THE FRONT. Trooper J. W. Mecham, writing from the Presidency Hospital, Bloemfontein, on 30th May, 1900, says :— Winter is now setting hi in earnest, and the days are very pleasant, but the nights are bitterly cold. -I wish I was with the column to-day, when they march into Johannesburg. We seem to be meeting with no opposi tion. The Boers have a wholesome dread of cavalry on their flanks. Al though that awn of the service does not bear the bunch of the work; it always puts the finish on ? an engagement. Geoff will in all probability see the finish of the war. Both our wounds have healed. Dick's arm is still stiff, but improving. I am as sound as ever again, except that when I sit on any thing hard for some time, my right leg is a trouble to me when I get upi The other day we witnessed the annexation ceremony. It was a sight worth seeing. The cheers that followed the 21 guns fired by our Artillery from the Dutch fort were deafening. The night before last, two officers and two tr...
