HOW TO BE BEAUTIFUL. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 2 April 1914

HOW TO BE BEAUTIFUL. The man, 01* woman, who wants to bo .is good-looking as nature will per mit is given a few practical hints in the "Family Doctor": — Don't eat your meals quickly; this causes indigestion and a red nose. Don't worry; other people's troubles are quite as bad as yours. Don't forget that a penny spent on fruit does more good than a shilling on buns or sweets. Don't walk five miles one day and stay at home all the next. Don't read til! midnight; one hour's sleep before twelve is worth five afterwards. Don't shut your bedroom window; fresh air is necessary for health. Don't expect physics and tonics to keep you well if you neglect the iaws of health and hygiene.

The Retort Courteous. One day a learned professor v>ns accosted by a very dirty little boot black: "Shine your shoes, sir?" The professor was impressed by the filthiness of the boy's face. "I don't want a shine, my lad,'' said he, "but if you'll go and wash your face I'll give you a sixr">nce." "A'riclit, sii'." >was the lad's reply, as he went over to a neighboring fountain and made his ablutions. Re turning, he held out his hand for the money. "Well, ray lad," said the professor, "you have earned your sixpence. Here [ it is." I "I dinna want it, auld chap," return ed the boy, with a lordly air. "Ye keep ' it and get yer hair cut."

CHAPTER VIII. Discovery. I. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 2 April 1914

CHAPTER VIII. Discovery. I. There was a close bond between the lovers now, and its golden shackles were the music of their day. f|ugU knew that she would speak presently, and tell him the whole truth of the tragic circumstance which had made of her an outcast. He waited confi dently for her to speak, proud that she should be his guest, grateful for every glance which fell from her eloquent eyes. To be sure, there were difficulties for them both—and not the least for midable was Geraldine. This shrewd Scotchwoman could make little of the simple Irish girl who gave so poor a clue to her trouble. Leila, had made up her mind from the first to tell Geraldine nothing, and she did not tell her less. Her ingenuity took re fuge in vague hints and odd phrases which foiled her antagonist and left her powerless. Geraldine turned to the Archdeacon and found in him a wor thy ark. "Something must be done at once," she said. The man agreed— though what the nature of that some thing should be, he wa...

LEILA AND HER LOVER By MAX PEMBERTON. Published by Arrangement with Ward, ek and Co. Ltd., Land. and Jlelb. All Rights Reserved. CHAPTER VII. Two Women. Leila awoke at Desdy's touch in. a ■spacious 'bedroom with wide embat tled windows looking out Upon the Firth of Forth. "L-ally," he cried, "why do you not get up—the clock had struck a lot of times. Aren't you going to get up to-day, Lally?" She stirred from a heavy sleep and sat up to look about her. The win dows were curtained, and out faint rays of the undimmed sunshine fell upon the gloomy tapestries of the high walls or the ancient gloomy tap estries of the high walls or the an cient hangings of the four-poster bed in which they had slept. Desdy was quite wide-awake and impatient of the night. She listened, and heard no other sound but that of the waves beating upon the distant shore. "Oh, Desdy," she exclaimed, "how you frightened me!" And then, "Have you been awake long? Did any one call us?" He said that he had only just "w...

THE PERFECT " b'QME HEALER, j For Skin Sores and Injuries. ' Every Homo jSTeeds Zani-Buk. The golden rule for every lioine is : " Keep Zam-Buk always handy." Whether it be a bruised forehead, trapped finger, grazed knee, scalded foot, out hand or sprained ankle, Zam-Buk soothes away smarting pain, prevents the injury from taking "bad ways." and ens tires quick, healthy healing. Mrs. }.!. Ihurv, Ruielagh street, Adelaide, says —" My son Arthur upset a cup of hot ka over hia •fool ■when lie was quite young. The flesh being so tender was ftarl'ulty scalded, and for three months the boy was in a shocking state. A nasty sore formed which seemed-to be eating iuto the ilesh. All efforts to liring the child relief were ineffective until we tried Zam-Buk. This balm proved remarkably soothing, and it soon caused the mass of inflammation to leave the sores. As we persevered with it, Zam-Buk began to heal the bad places, great progress being noticeable every day. Continued treatment with Zam-Bu...

CARE OF YOUNG TREES. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 2 April 1914

CARE OF YOUNG TREES. The care oC the young trees at this season of tlie year is one o£ the mcst important of orchard operations. Many trees have been planted out dur ing the past season. Whatever care and attention are given to the young trees will be amply repaid to the grower in after years, owing to the j vigor, sturdiness, and other qualities thus imparted to them. It !s a mis take to plant a young orchard, and, after cutting back the trees, to leav,? them practically to their own devices, other than following the usual meth ods of soil cultivation. The trees, after the early summer cultivation and cleaning of tlie soli, should be mulched with straw, grass, or leafage of some description. This mulching should not be crowded round the stem, its object being main ly to create moist ana cool soil con ditions, and to encourage a free root system. The mulch material should be occasionally stirred, and no weed or grass growth should be permitted to accumulate amongst it. Where mulchin...
