HIS OWN FOLK. A Bron er A Bnam. The trucks stood idle on the track, with never a knob ot coal to give them any semblance of utility; and their owners' names showed out white against the dusky paint, as il calling on those absent magnates to give them at least some function, if only a ton or two of rubbish to whirl south- ward withal ? The chill autumn night was creeping on apace. Already a'curtain ot grey mist was rising from the valley below, and bidding the children to run home to te»; bat, cruelly enough, there was no tea to run borne for the Longbank men were ' out! The Nervousness of Private Rich ' ""? B* FuNcm MIBLOWB. ; ¿J*" HK men of the ' Seor tm I . pions' were certainly 1«^jy nervous. Nothing else could account for the frequent accidents that happened in the regiment. The epidemic, the only one on record, occurred during the last British campaign in ' New Zealand.' It began with a; murderous assault on one of the sentries, Privat« Bicharás, who was found by the sergeant ot the guard lying senseless outside the guard- room, with a terrible gash in his head. In- side the gñárd-room no sound had been heard, but it was generally concluded that poor Richards had fallen a victim to the hate ot a prowling native. It was lucky for the . wounded man that the sergeant's visit of inspection had not been longer delayed. Even as it was, he waa scarcely alive, and it wss many weeks before be waa discharged from the infirmary. In ' the meantime ' Captain Wilson, of Richards' company, was acting in a manner which, whatever its intention, was not calcu- ...
