HOBART TOWN.       Sitting Magistrate - Thomas Archer, Esq.   SHIP News. - On Monday last arrived the ship Baring, Captain Lamb, with con- victs from England for Port Jackson ; hav- ing put in here for fresh provisions and wa- ter. Beside the Surgeon Superintendant, David Reid, Esq. R. N. and Captain Charles Coates, of the 69th Regi- ment, commanding the guard of the 48th Regiment, and Ensign Grove White, of the latter, with the Lady and fa- mily of Captain C., there are on board several passengers,     viz, Peter Roberts, Esq. Deputy Assistant Commissary General ; Rev. John Cross and family, with the Rev. John Butler, Mr. James Kempe, and Mr. Francis Hall, Mission- aries, and their families ; Mrs. Turnbull and family ; and   Tooi and Teterree, New Zealanders who went to England in the Kangaroos. AT the Recommendation of His HONOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR SORELL, His EXCELLENY the GOVERNOR in CHIEF       his been pleased to appoint Mr. JAMES KELLY to be Harbour Master and joint Pilot at Hobart Town, in Van Diemen's Land, with at Salary of Fifty Pounds Sterling per Annum, commen- cing from the 1st of the ensuing Month of June. His EXCELLENCY the GOVERNOR in CHIEF has also been pleased to appoint, at the Recommendation of His HONOR LIEUTE- NANT GOVERNOR SORELL, Mr. G. READ to be Superintendant of Government Carpenters at Hobart Town, in Van Diemen's Land, with a Salary of Fifty Pounds Sterling per Annum, to commence on and from the 1st of   April last past. LATEST BRITISH EXTRACTS: The Isabella and Alexander discovery ships arrived in the Humber on Saturday week, and   after taking pilots on board, sailed for the Thames on the following day. Captain Sir Joha Ross, of the Alexander, reached Hull on Saturday afternoon, and set off about two hours afterwards in a chaise for London. The following particulars respecting the newly- discovered race of Esquimaux were communi- cated by Sir J. Ross:—   The discovery ships had been lying ad-   joining the land, between lir.[?] 70"and 77 fastened to an iceberg for two or three days, and had just shoved off, when, to their great surprise, they saw some persons coming down from the interior towards the shore, in sledges drawn by dogs.
