'In presenting their report for the 83rd half yeai-, the Directors have again the pleasure of congratulating the proprietors on the, continued well-being of the establish ment. 'The. business of the Banlr rlur'ng the half year has been very similar in character to'that of former periods, embracing all the operations common to a Bank of Issue, Exchange, and Deposit, and the steady increase of all the transactions of the Bank, including those of the several branches, which has been the subject of remark in former repcrts, continues to manifest itself, , and indicates a corresponding increase in the commercial transactions of the colony. The Daily News. SATURDAY, JANUARY 13, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 13 January 1883

SATURDAY, JANUARY 13, 1883. 'While praising the City Council for the energy and enterprise they have exhibited'inboldlyayailingthcniselves of their borrowing powers for the con struction of public works, yet we are reluctantly compelled to admit that .they are not altogether faultless, nor can they be termed a 'model' Coun cil. There is' no earthly reason why the construction of £u,blic works should, apparently monopolise 'all the energy and engross the whole of the attention of our Councillors and1 Mayor, leaving those comparatively speaking minor, yet very important other duties per .taining to their office unfulfilled — duties which if properly attended _ to would add considerably to the im provement of our 'Pair City,': and to the increased comfort of its inhabi tants. ; . One great drawback and serious in convenience which we have endured already far, too long is the want; of means to light; ;the town at j night. True it- is that the citizens, have only themselves to 'blame for...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. THE RECREATION GROUND. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 13 January 1883

LETTERS TO THE- EDITOR. THE BECBEATION GBOUND. Sib, — Let , ma, through your -columns, ' direct the attention of the civic axithoritios to the damage that is going .on to the-trees which with so much trouble and at eo lara-a an expense have been planted on the, Be creation Ground. The present warm, weather is telling sadly upon them; ,soine- ar9 quite dead, while others are withering, and this notwithstanding a plentiful suppTy of water in a well, furnished with a, good pump, close.. at hand.. A'fter the present summer prqbably.the trees will have become so well rooted. that further watering will become unnecessary. The same complaint might be urged in respect to the trees plant ed in the streets in various parts of the' city; I refer particularly to the Tdsmanian ;blue gums, many of which are not onlyv in a, languishing condition for want of m'oisturey but suffering from general inattention— want of tieing to the stakes and trimming ; in some cases the fastenings are doing mis chie...

HEAP, THE SUICIDE. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 13 January 1883

HEAP, THE SUICIDE. Sir, — In the Morning Herald of the 9th inst., under the heading ' Items of News,' the public were favored with a resutnd of the antecedents of Heap's distressed widow. I read it with pain — it is calculated to do no good were it authentic, mnch less a vile fabrication so far as the first husband of the unfortunate woman is concerned, upon, whose children, in our midst, undeserved stigma has been stamped. The first hus band, the paper in question states, '* lost his* life by being struck with a spade.' Nothing; of the kind, as the clergyman who minister ed at his sick-bed can vouch. The cause of death can be traced to the reaction of cer tain ailments contracted through his long and arduous service in India, before, all through, and after the dreadful Mutiny. His records read, as to his conduct* and character at discharge, ' They are good' ; that he was ' in possession of medal and clasps for suppression of Mutiny in Central India. Discharged at 9d.; having served...

The Daily News. MONDAY, JANUARY 15, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 15 January 1883

vt\)t JBaiTp ^etotf* MONDAY, JANUARY 15, .1883. Closely connected with the adequate lighting of our city is the naming of the streets and numbering of - the houses. Of course the streets have or are supposed to have names, but we are sure that there are many residents in Perth who would be sorely puzzled to tell the names of any but the prin cipal thoroughfares, and that even the members of the City Council them selves would be unable to do so with out reference to their surveyor's map, and the inconvenience thus caused is in some cases very great. Some months ago a member of the local Municipal Council brought forward a motion that the names of the various streets in Fremantle should be paint ed on the different corners, but after shelving the consideration of the mat ter for a month, the Council by a large majority declined to incur such a ' useless expense.' We do not think for one 'minute that the' City Council; would be influenced by such a miser able parsimonious spirit, but; ...

CABLE TELEGRAMS. LONDON, January 10. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 15 January 1883

GABLE TELEGRAMS. (associated press telegrams.) LONDON, Januarv 10. On the Stock Exchange it is considered, that having in view the minimum fixed by the Victorian Government there is not suf ficient margin of profit to induce capitalists to tender it is thought better terms will be made for the summer loan, and that it would have been wise if, awaiting the impending fall in the Bank rate last month, Bankers ;had been advised that a lower minimum should be adopted; but under the condi tions of the prospectus issued by the Vic torian Government opinion is held by financiers that it is not impossible to absorb the loan at present price. The State Treasurer of Tennessee, who was reported to have been arrested in Texas, has since escaped from custody, and has now reached Mexico. Kossuth, .the celebrated Hungarian patriot, who for several years past has lived in aquiet way at Turin, devoting himself to scientific pursuits, is very ill.
