The Frozen Meat Conference. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 19 June 1896

The Frozen Meat Conference. On Thursday next, 25bh inst., bhe conference of delegates from the Meat Freezing Companies will meet in Sydney. From all that has trans pired it seems as if it would be a success, and we sincerely trust ib will. The price of frozen meat in London calls loudly for some form of co-opera: bion here, instead of the cut bhroab policy of bhe past. A correspondent of the New York ' Sun ' writes : ' What are so many people coming to the ' Sun ' for about the doubts and fears of matrimony 1 It is a simple thing, bhis deciding whe ther to marry or not, and is all con tained in this one bit of advice : Whenever you are more miserable without the person you love than you could possibly be with that person, marry.'

The Delegates' Conference. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 19 June 1896

';\ The Delegates' Confer J ence. The interest taken in the forthcom ing conference of delegates in Sydney is very healthy. The letters appearing in this issue will show one of the dangers of the conference. There are a whole host of subjects that need immediate attention, but if the delegates attempt to deal with them they will be shipwrecked in a sea of talk. It is impossible to do everything at once. At the present moment there are G4 boards in the country, and each one is crying with its own voice for the righting of its own wrongs. If the delegates on Monday, July 6th, agree to ask the Minister to amalgamate all the boards into one Board of Advice, with nine members, then the first move vvi 1 have been made towards giving the stock-owners of the colony a say in legislation. If the delegates attempt to do more than that there will be chaos. Once the Minister agrees to try and ?* pass an Act to effect this the stock owners and all interested in pastoral matters can meet on the Tu...

3|i Boss Boot, THIS is a Gentleman's Boot made of the skin of the POKPOISE, commonly known as PORPOISE 1 HIDE. The good qualities ot this class of Leather are I well known, though when people get imitations in place of the | real thing they can't believe it. PORPOISE HIDE, I the produce of the fish of that ilk, is tough as well as soft, strong as well as tender. It stands water to the extent of being water-proof, and is cool and pleasant to the foot in all weathers. If a Customer were going to CENTRAL AFRICA, where the temperature is 'that of a place we dare not mention, and asked us to recommend the proper kind of boot to wear, we should say the BOSS BOOT, because it is of PORPOISE HIDE; whereas, if our Customer were off to ICELAND, and asked the same ques tion, we should say the BOSS BOOT for the same reason. Yes, you cannot beat the BOSS BOOT, the price of which is THIRTEEN AND SIX. I, I UNIVERSAL PROVIDERS | HAYMARKET (only), SYDNEY.

Homebush Reports. TO THE EDITOR "S. S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 19 June 1896

Homebush Reports. TO THE EDITOR ' S. S. AND S. JOURNAL.' sir, — as a -suoscnoer ana an in terested reader of your quite alive little paper, may I make a suggestion re reporting fat stock sales at Homebush? It would be an immense benefit to a great number of your readers, if you would, when quoting prices of some of the leading lines of fat sheep, give an estimate of their weight and quality of pelt to those who never have a chance of attending the Homebush markets. A quotation of 'prime wethers, Ss t-d'; conveys very little to their minds, as those quoted wethers may weigh G5lb. or 701b. Trusting you nvill favourably consider the matter, Yours, etc., Claude Archer, Manager, Oakhurst Station. Morangorell. The safest course for a human being in a thunderstorm is to get thoroughly wet. Franklin once said that he could kill a rat when dry by means of an electric discharge, but never when it was web.

Queensland Ticks TICKS AFLOAT. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 19 June 1896

Queensland Ticks, TICKS AFLOAT. The latest telegram from Brisbane {.bout ticks opens up the question in a fearful and wonderful manner. JSow that the tick question Ins become so popular everybody is lucking i-jv them, and the habits of the despised Ucks are h-in-i found out. This telegram says : — ? ?? Several gentlemen have- reported to the Chief Inspector of rf'.ock uie discovery of ticks on wild ducks, pl*in turkeys, and wild animals. The authorities are now perfectly satisfied that the ticks are disseminated by means of these. Mr. C. J. Pound found ticks on plain turkeys, and also discovered that, dropping from the cattle as they plunge into the water of creeks and lagoons, the ticks ding to floating leaves, and so possibly eventually attach themselves to the bodies of waterfowl. Mr. White, of Townsville, a member of the Local Government Commission, adds his testimony to that of others, and declares that he has seen ticks on fl -ating drift in great clusters. The importance of t...

Death of Mr. A. H. Cox. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 19 June 1896

Death of Mr. A. H. Cox. A strong, good man has just passed away in Mr Alexander Hassel Cox, of Oakfield, Mudgee. He was a man who was deeply interwoven with the pastoral life of this country. He was a native of the Mudgee district, and has spent his whole 57 years ot life in the district, with the exception of a time when he was squatting on the Macquarie. His life was a noble one. He was at one time Mayor of the Cudgegong municipality. He was a member of the Stock and Pastures Board, and of the Licensing Court. He was also clergyman's warden at St. John's Church, and he took a hand in every good work. At the time of his death he was under promise to come to Sydney in July for one of the judges in the Sheep Show, a position for which his long experience tibted him admirably. His father was Mr. Geo. Cox, the original settler of the Mudgee district, and his brother is the Hon. G. H. Cox. The family is one of the best known and most widely respected in the colony, and they will have th...

The Delegates Conference. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 19 June 1896

l he Delegates Con ference. TO THE EDITOR ' S. S, AND S. JOURNAL.' Sir. — I notice by your issue of the 1 2th lust, that the only question — known to the delegates through your widely-circulated paper — to be dis cussed is the proposed amalgamation (if the bo mis throughout; the- colony. jNow, snowing tnat there win oe several important resolutions brought bi'fore that meeting which will iv quire a good deal of time to discuss them properly, I would suggest that the delegates meet on Friday, July 3rd, at Aarons' Exchange Hotel and give notice to the secretary and the meeting of the resolutions they intend to bring forward on Monday night. By doing this, the meeting would be much better prepared to deal with the ques tions brought before them and it would be the means of bringing them to gether and the different districts could compare notes and assist them in get ting through their bu&iness on Monday night in a proper manner. They could at that meeting draft the most impor t...

Anthrax or Cumberland GERMS AND SPORES. WRITTEN FOR THE "SYDNEY STOCK AND STATION JOURNAL." V. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 19 June 1896

Anthrax or Cumberland GERMS AND SPORES. Written for the ' Sydney Stock and Station Journal.' (By The Globe Trotter.) V. Did you ever set fire to a bunch of ' porcupine grass on a cold day 1 It is only ab some seasons of the year that you dare to do such a thing in the mallee scrub, but it is worth doing just to see how fiercely it flames, and how savagely the great tongues of fire stretch out to catch the branches of the mallee trees that bend towards it. You get some idea of what a bush fire in a dry season means. How little town-bred folk understand of the bush. Yet, if their souls can feel and their hearts can beat in sympathy with the still life of the deathless world about them, it is good to have them out, especially if they can take the advice of the poet who said — ' See that thou bring not to field or stone The fancies found in books, Leave other's eyes and fetch your own To have the landscape looks.' The mysteries of life that touch a man on every side are vast and appal l...
