Stable Manure. [Newspaper Article] — Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser — 21 March 1913

Stable Manure. Losses in the value of manure oc cur chiefly in three ways. 1. By the escape of the liquid portion through the floors of the stable or byre. 2. By heating aud fermentation due to being heaped for long periods ' ; dt a iiiut. 3. By bleaching and drainage, due to exposure to Ihe sun, wind, and rain. It is stated by an American writer that about 75 per ceut.^of the ferti lising elements fed to the c:;w are left, in the manure, so that it is pos sible to rcduce the expeudiiure on' fertiliseri^d. at^the^sajne liipo to_ improve the physical condition of the soil by properly caring for and ap plying manure. It has been estimated that manure from ten cows for six months has a fertilising value in Anu-rica of 186 dollars (£38), not reckoning tiie value of the manure in adding humus to the soil, and though it in .y be that Australian values of fertilisers would not justify such a high valua tion here, it is pretty evident that there is money in manure if it is cared for- in suc...

Vigorous Maize. [Newspaper Article] — Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser — 21 March 1913

; Vigorous Maize. A -farmer in the southern -'table-- . land district planted maize in rowc, 3ft 6in.iipart, and\16in in the rows. The growth was very luxuriant, . aDd the prospects excellent, but the suck ers intermingled to such an extent that he feared the cobs would not , get sufficient sun, and he asked the department If it would be of advant age to sucker the crop. To ripen tne corn tnorougniy ne expected io have to leave the stalks till they were quite dry, and he asked if the stover would then be ef much value for feeding horses and cattle. In his reply the Superintendent of Agrioulture remarked that for early varieties the distances mentioned _ were very suitable, and oould not be regarded as too close. Experiments conducted in suckerinc maize show that as a rule it does more harm than good, and it is only when very short of feed that such an operation should bo attempted. The value of the stover depends, of course, on the stage at which the maize is harvested, If the stove...
