The Jews of England. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 18 February 1898

The Jews of England. The Speaker of November 27th, in an article on the Jews of England endeavours to discover the cause of their unpopularity in the past, and how far the causes have vanished or remain. Much of the persecution was the result of religious hatred. The fervour of the mediaeval church which, in its prime, launched the Crusades, and in its decadence of the Inquisition, drove men expressly to oppress the Jews. But it is doubtful even if religious fanaticism would have prevailed against them had it not been fed by secular emotions too. Ail through the Middle Ages usury was a sin, and the Jews were the usurers of Europe Henry III. compelled every Jewish usurer to wear a plate on his breast to show his trade ; citizens of London rose and massacred hundreds of their Jewish neighbors a certain Jew had forced a certain Christian to pay him more than 2s. a week interest on a loan of 20s. The Jews were hated because they grew rich by a method which Christians regarded as dishono...

The Jewess of To-day. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 18 February 1898

The Jewess of To = day. It is difficult for the Christian to understand the Jew ; it is more difficult still for him to understand the Jewess. Men. being more largely in the same fields of practical pursuits naturally find many points of contact. There being but one commerce for all merchants, one practice for all lawyers, one science for all student-, those who engage in any of these vocations are rubbed, sometimes beaten, into some sort 01 smimtuae, ana iney Know Deiore hand just what they have to expect under given circumstances. It is only in things which are not of the surface, but which Ibelongs to the inner, more hidden life — the things that are characteristic of the Jew, and differentiate him from his surroundings— where the difficulty exists, because early impressions inherited prejudices, as well as church theories, have cast their shadows over the Jew, and freedom of mind to perpetrate them is not at the command of everybody. Gadding about the Jewess should not ; but vis...

MUSICAL EVENING. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 18 February 1898

MUSICAL EVENING. Mr. Henry Hockings held his usual evening at home, (for the first and third Thursday), at 'Fern Villa,' Liberty-street, Enmore, last evening, and entertained a few friends with his usual hospitality. A very pleasant evening was spent and some good music rendered by the company; Miss Thornton, the hostess (Mr. Hocking's neice) with Miss Bigby rendered some charming vocal and instrumental selections on the Guitar which were received with much appreciation. Some good selections were ren dered by Miss Pearce. The party broke up after refreshments in time to reach last trams much pleased with the evening's entertainment. If any religion, it is certainly Judaism which may call itself the religion of progress. The father actually wept. ' Young man,' said he, ' you are asking me to part with my dearest treasure.' ' I say,' said the young man, ' If you really feel so bad over it, I am willing to compromise by taking the dowry and letting you keep the girl.' Von Moltke was se...

What may be gained by rising at the meetings of our Communal Institutions and regretting the want of interest displayed by our co religionists in their own works has yet to be demonstrated. Yet year by year we find almost the same gentlemen addressing lamentations on the same theme, to the same audiences, and foreshadowing the same task for the next opportunity. With a number of our leading experienced business men louowing out mis plan, it strikes the observer that they are so taken up with business affairs on all other, occasions, tbat they endeavour by every means to prevent themselves acting on anything like business-like lines, as if familiarity with busi ness h*d created a contempt of it. Each speaker at the annual meeting of the Home took care to praise — and very rightly so— the good work the Home had done, and also to point out the fact it had the means of pre venting imposition, that it required funds to carry on its fullest scheme, and that even its heartiest well-wishers...

Notes and Comments. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 18 February 1898

Notes and Comments. When will the Board of Management under take the only scheme that will ensure a per manent Choir for the Great Synagogue. There aie plenty of good voices among our young people, and it would assist the choirmaster, besides enabling a return to the congregational singing if it were acted on. Mr. S. floiien, President of the Montefiore^ Home sets an example — well worth copying,, by attending to his duties without considering; holidays an absolute necessity. Mr. Arthur Langley (Ottolangni), of Double Bay, youngest son ox the late John Langley Esq., and Mrs. Fanny Langley, of Melbourne,. is announced as engaged to Miss Dolly Zionss, eldest daughter of Henry Zions, Esq., of Pad dington. Just fancy a host of prettily dressed brides maids attacking —with collection boxes for -a.. charity, the spectators at a fashionable wed ding. Which of our young people will promise fa - usher in the innovation. It would cause end-. less amusement and assist a worthy cause,. Eecollec...

Councillor Rapken. Councillor Rapken (father of Mr. Nahum Rapken of this City) visited Sydney prior to his departure for England and Canada on Monday night last. From the 'Leader ' we copy the following: — At the meeting of the Northcote Municipal Council on Monday, Jan., 31sfc. Cr. Rapken informed his fellow councillors that he hn,d decided to visit America and Canada, in - consequence of which he desired the council to grant him six month's leave of absence. He thanked the Mayor and Councillors for the courtesy always shown him, and expressed his regret at having to temporarily sever his con nection' with the council and town. Or. Mclntosh said he had pleasure in moving that Cr. Rapken be allowed six months leave of absence. When in New Zealand and other centres he hoped Cr.
