VITAL STATISTICS SHOW INCREASE IN I DEATH RATE, DROP IN MARRIAGES ' VITAL statistics of Queensland for the September quarter, 1948, showed an increased death rate, and a lower marriage rate. The death rate of 11.7 per 1000 population was the highest record ed since the high rate of 12.0 in the September quarter' of 1939. The marriage rate of 8.1 per 1000 population was the low est recorded since the third quarter of 1939, when the rate was 8.0. Seme fall in the marriage rate was not unexpected, following the high proportion ■ot young people who were married during the war years. The birlli rati; for the yuurtor, wliicli remained high at 26.1 per 1000 population, was still showing the effect of the large number of marriages «liich followed the end of the war.
