For Chronic Chest Complaints, Woods' Great P«ppormint Carp, - Ods An accused person, at fclio Ornaga (S.S W) court on ft recent Saturday, objected to' tho roporters being present When tlie arresting constable was stopping into the box, he asked the presiding magribtrato if tho evidence to bo given was in connection with his case. Constable Coleman, whowa9 standing nearthn dock, informed him that it was. "Then I object to theso reporters," he vigourously protested. *' I won't have this got into newspaper?. It's a scandtilous case altogether." Ilia pr'otcst availed him nothing, of course; but his attitude was like that of many others who get into court. They think that n nnwapiper should be published without news—of the description which they don't want t* seo published. Sometimes (but rarely) a happening of a different kind occurs. INFLUENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 10 June 1914

INFLUENCE. Our daily behavior, our manners and morals, have a power over oth ers that never ceases, nor can cease, until the poor waves of time break into nothingness upon the eternal shore. Therefore it is well that wo should have a clear view of that great force of life which we call "in fluence." The word is not ill-chosen. Influence is something that flows into you; whether you wish it or not, as the air around you will enter your lungs without your thinking about it. And as it is not needful even that you should know anything about your lungs in order that the air may enter them, so all vilenesses or sweetnesses may enter into your character by the influence of others, and do you either good or evil; and whether you know you are being affected or not, you are being affected by a necessary law of your being. Therefore "influence" is that power which one man exercises over another, modifying and deter mining his thoughts and actions, and that influence may be exercised with out p...

A FARMER'S CREED. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 10 June 1914

A FARMER'S CREED. For this day I will do my best to do everything just right; to he good and kind to every living thing I have any thing to do with; to 'be thankful that I live iu such a good world; to make that world a little bit better; to think some, new thought; to read a page or two from some good book; to look up from lily work long enough to see what my neighbor is doing so well; to strike some blow for the right; to get a little nearer to the heart of my wife and children; and to ask God to help me make to-morrow a better day, a much better day, than thiis has been. A tip is diagnosed by a Scottish writer as a small buih of money you give to somebody because you're afraid he will not like not 'being paid for something you haven't asked him to do.

THE SHAPING OF OUR LIVES. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 10 June 1914

THE SHAPING OF OUR LIVES. There is nothing more certain than that we grow like what we constantly live with, look upon and copy. Lives are raised or lowered by the great ness or littleness of ideals. Actions show the selfishness or unselfishness of the heart. Words tell the trend of the mind—and the atmosphere of a life reveals with unfailing accuracy the nature and aspirations of the soul. Every day and every hour leaves its mark on * the character, and sees an angle rubbed smoother—a virtue pol ished into greater beauty—or dis closes the soul trying to hide its de formity under the mists of selfish ness, carelessness or ignorance. A great privilege is that which we possess of "shaping our lives," ami one upon which to spend earnest thought.

The People's Party. A meeting of (ho Birchip branch of the above was held on Saturday, when Vice-President Porter presided over a fair gathering of members. The secretary (Mr J. T. Lilburne) re ported that he had attended the confer ence held in Melbourne some weeks ago, and briefly touched on the various items, dealt with. He said Messrs Irrine and Watt had addressed the conference, the former basing his remarks on the mar riage tie controversy, while the latter dealt principally with the electrification of the suburban railways, and tho found ing of industries in the city. The gene ral opinion of those present at the con ference was that there was too much centralisation about Mr Watt and that ho was not the right man for the People's Party. The conference ap pointed a committee to watch the interests of the Party in both the Federal and the State Houses ot Parliament. It was carried that each branch" of the party contribute 3s per member per annum to the funds of the executive, i...
