General Comments. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 20 May 1922

General Conneflts. Afl the Ipswich. City Council seema j to be unable to cope with the Btray ing stock problem, it is not very surprising that the Barcaldine Shire Council is in the same boat, and cattle, sheep, goats, &c., allowed to I do Just as they like and go where over they like. Goats make quite a bad enough mess in the streets, but when cows and calves also do their bit, the effect can be imagined. As the Council of Ipswich failed, the matter was brought up at a Cham ber of Commerce meeting. But auch a Chamber is meant to deal With trade and commerce, and the chairman wanted to know in what yiuy were straying stock connected With those subjects. The discus sion was rather amusing and a few .extracts (from the "Times") are •worth quoting. Mr- Watson: A good few are turning their stock out in the hope they will be iu c pounded, so as to get rid of them. Mr. Woodward: There seemed to bo "some who had the privilege to ran stock 6n the roads. Mr. Wat son: Mr. Woodward can...

At the Dressing Table. By Mimosa. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 20 May 1922

At the Dressing Table. | By Mimosa. How Milicent Cheated Father Time. I hadn't seen Milicent for over three years, when I called on her a lew days ago. 1» knew she had taken up charitable work, and from what I had heard of her from time to time, hard worki early rising, and late to bed, I quite expected to find her looking older, and very much the worse for her three years' work. But far from looking jaded and tired. 1 found her younger and fresher than when I had last seen her- Her cotn plexion was smooth and clear, and her hair brighter, and more glossy than before, while the few wrinkles which I remember had entirely disappeared. . How She Preserved Her Complexta*. After a little persuasion she told me the secret of how she had not only kept, but improved, her looks during the three years in which w« had not met, in spite of her hard, work and late hours. She told me she owed the fresh ness of her complexion to the re gular use of every night of «• plain Mercollsed Wkx- This she ...

STOCK STATION & COMMERCIAL CHAMPION OFFICE. Friday, May 19th. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 20 May 1922

Station 6s Champion Officii Friday, Hay 19th. ITe are not pessimistic but judging from many years' residence in this district conditions point undoubtedly to a dry timo before us. There have certainly been some signs of rain during the past ten weeks, but tbe light cloud which covered tbe sky did not develop io anything ' ame than " flimsy things as light as air," and as there is a decided change for cold weather, ire can look forward to the remainder of tbe Autumn at any rate being dry. Tbe vagaries of temperature have been somewhat remark* able during the week. On Friday we find a max. of 81.6 (legs.) with a min. of 60.4 degs. Then tbe wind changed from 8.E. to E 8.E., and we recorded on Saturday 78 and 46 degs. respectively. Tbe wind again veered to the &, and Sunday found us recording 74 and 44.8 degs., while Saltern Creek marked 39 decs, at a minimum. Monday was 77.0 and 42 degs., and Tuesday a still lower minimum, although the max. had increased to 80.1 degB., viz.: 37...

The Paramount Picture Theatre. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 20 May 1922

The Paramount Picture Theatre* _nO a. The new Paramount Picture Theatre opened under most favorable auspice*' last Saturday evening. The aUemJ ance was extremely large, accom modation being at a premium, end extra seating had to be pro/idcd. The Town Band played a number of selections in front of the theatre be fore the performance commenced, and people were streaming from all directions. Mr. Burke had , gene rously offered the Band a percentage of Saturday night's proceeds, an^ the donation is much appreciated by the Band committee. Mr. W. J. O'Regan is to be complimented upon his en terprise in erecting and equipping such an up-to-date picture theatre, an^ we doubt it there is a better ap pointed theatre in the Central-West. The spacious place is painted throughout, even the framework of the canvas chairs, and pot plants grace the entrance and surroundings. The "roost" accommodation is es pecially comfortable, and the canvas chairs are so arranged that there is ample passage room ...
