CORRESPONDENCE. TO THE EDITOR OF THE "WESTERN HERALD." [Newspaper Article] — Western Herald — 23 May 1888

CGJ&RESPONDE NCE. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ' WESTERN' JIEB.VLD.'' Sin, — It is usual to send our criticisms on reports in papers to the editor of the papers publishing the same, but in this case I must claim to make the exception to the rule In a late issue of the Central Australian there is a report of the ball held under the patronage of the B.J.C:, and I must ex press my regret after noting the fact that the recent Plain and Fancy Dress Ball took place at JJeiguan's on Tuesday last, the Ventral report reads 'It was not up to much.' What is tbe meaning of this 'not up to much?' Does it mean the dresses, the music, the refreshments, the persons there, or wliat does it mean. I take it, to bo a screen for the writer to throw dirty water on the enjoyment- of the residents of Bourke or the visitors of the district. It is a matter of great surprise that the editor allowed such a sentence to appear. *' Not up to much' may not seem much in some people's minds, but it looks a lot to ot...

Spite of! hiii assurance to the contrary it is quite evident that the Premier has allowed the fervour of the public agitation regard ing the Chinese Question to carry him away. There can be no questioning the desirability of passing restrictive legislation, but for for all that there is no justification in the present aspect of affairs for volunt arily inducing friction with the mother country. So far in the history of these colonies there has has been no instance of the Imperial authorities seeking to unduly interfere in our affairs, or neglecting to com ply with our wishes, -when they were mani festly such, and it certainly is as impolitic as it is undesirable and uncalled for, ior the Premier to anticipate trouble and to utter words that can only be construed as threats. It -will be quite time enough to quarrel with England when onr interests are threatened and it is nothing short of bombastic foolish ness to used the heated language with ?which the Premier is credited. At Hay says The Standard the weather since our last -has been fine, and rather -cold. The rain which fell last week has not beeii followed by more, as was confidently expected and consequently has not done much good. Much more is wanted to put hb tight for the winter. The only stock passings . are 3000 fat sheep from Burrabogie to Melbourne market, and -4000 fat sheep from WiUandra station to Melbourne., Whittingham Bros, owners. At Wilcannia says the Herald the weather is very warm and fine, but hopes are entertained that all the rain is not over yet. Owing to the pro tracted drought very few transactions have taken place in the sale of stock The recent rains, al though partial, had a decidedly good effect, and last week a great many lots of sheep were put under offer, principally for delivery off the shears. Should the roads ' continue open for travelling ^—^~ ''v *' ; I*01* *nere will be an increased demand for all SIas'ses of stock. The following are the stock pass ings : — 303 ...
