Courage. Courage, like other qualities, has jits varieties. Some men are born brav^, others acquire intrepidity from example, and even a timid spirit may be stimulated b y action, until personal apprehension ia overcome. Amidst the crush of battle the dullest soul catches a glorious impulse.and for the time, casts off its natural torpidity. To exert, howaver, that mental calmneas which conveys in brief and lucid language the details of plans of action, requiring the agency of many, and whose success the misconception of an individual mi ght destroy; this demands a philosophic concentration of thought which many, found foremost in tbe fi ght, never can obtain. This, the most important quality of a general, Napoleon and Wellington possessed extensively, and when the fate of battle bung upon a hair, both were calm and self collected, and the order, upon which victory or defeat depended, was issued with a coolness that approached insensibility.— The terrible attack at Easliog wa...

.The whig 'safety guard'lias not been able 10 prevent ibe collapsing of some of some of the Clay boilew. In the Herald of ihia morning, there is q melanchol y announcement ofthe manner in which one of the editors was "disappointed." It appears that a meeting yf. the Clay Cldb of Allegheny city waB announced For Saturday evening last, and the editor went there lull Qf the 'expectation of regaling himsblf upon a feasl of federal oratory, when, UiO8tv di8astrous to relate, he says, 'he did not fiod au assemelage for this purpose.' — The.editors blame the failure of this mee tlSjj Upon some 'misunderstanding in giving tfce*p>op]e notice.1 This excuse won ' t clp-rvfor how could the Herald;man have found his way to the place of meeting, if tbe 're had been no notice giren of it? Tbe cause lies deeper—it is to be found in the inherent rottenness c * the federal cauae—the days of-humbug are past, and neither 'coon skins,' 'hard cider' nor 'virgin heifers' can recal them. From Mexico. Later news from Mexico has been received at New Orleans. The Mexican squadron sailed from Vera Cruz on the 15'.h u!t. It took the first division of tbe Mexican troops deat'ned forihe subjugation of-Yucatan. This consists of thirteen hundred men. Tbe object of the invasion of Yucatan is to punish the natives and get possession of their fleet—a ten gun brig, arid two six gun schooners, for the purpose of operating against Texas. The plan of a new constitution has not y?t been reported to tbe Mexican Congress b y the committee appointed to frame it. The papers publish protests from tfte soldiers against the formation of one in a federal form. This is done at tbe instigation ot Santa Anna, The new Mexican iSriff goes into operation on the first of November. The duties are reduced about one half. All is dead silence at Mexico on the subject of Mr. Websrei's letter. No opinion as to the probable course which the government will pursue can be given, A Mr. Joaepli Wells h...

|C3* We have been put in po ss--sion of a fact cf de.-p ' merest to our "con* temporaries" 10 which we invite lheir attention, ll is said that two editors connected with one of our morning papers, last Sunday afternoon, took a walk a few miles into the country, and then and there did coljlude and contrive to "didd/«" a respectable jcitizen out of a small sum of money, while 'enjoying his hwsp/tal/iy. We forbear giving the names of the men concerned in this transaction, but leave it lo,the sympathetic imaginations of our pugnacious coteraporaries, who can settle it at the same time they are arranging ihe other 'natters a! variance between them.

The cost of the last Congress.—Many of our exchange'papets are enli ghtening their readers on the cost of the last Congress. In round numbers the Madisonian puts down the amount, for the House of Representatives, at one iniliura and ahaif of dollars. If this amount was all that the people have to pay. great as- iHs, it would • till be but an inconsiderable item. To form proper estimate ofthe com to the penple .we must take into the account the constant lo s by the suspension of almost every kind of business. New Jersey. The democrats of this State are making active preparations for the election in November, and they appear to be quise confident of giving the "Broad Seal" party a Waterloo defeat. The Morris Canal and Banking Company, which has heretofore been a formidable eugiiiH in the hands of the federalists in carrying on thetr electioneering lrauds, is now bankrupt and powerless, and unable to overwhelm the honest people with full blown corruptions of chartered privileges. The contest is now one of men, and in al! such contests the democrats feel confident of success. -'

KP We would feel obliged to the editors of the Chronicle, if they would, before alluding to our differences wilh other papers, inform themselves of tl>e merits and nature of those differences. It is not true, as the Chronicle asseris, that ihe Gazette is "trying to prevail upon us to say one word" in favor of the Tariff. The labors ofthe Gazette have been directed to the object of neutralizing what we have said in favt fr ofthe Tariff. Will ihe Chronicle editors examine our paper of Thursday last, and correct their mistatemenl?

The federalists of AlassacmiseUs have passed an apportionment bill which is dcariibediis being more unjust in its provisions than any of thtip|ormer efforts to disfrancise the democracy wherever they have had ihe power. It has created a feeling of strong indignniion throughout the State, and the peals of democratic thunder that are issued against the fraud, make the geVryraanderer? Iremble for the safety of their party, even in the witch-burning, blue-light commonwealth of Massachusetts.
