NEWS COMMENTS [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 2 April 1896

NEWS COMMENTS A survey for a ship canal from Lake Erie to the Atlantic sea-board is proposed by Congressman Hepburn s new bill . Every farmer in the west would be directly benefited by such a canal . One of Ohio s great men (?) has framed a law which he probably thinks will send his fame as a legislator echoing down the corridors of time together with the signers of the Declaration of : Independence and the Magna Charta . It provides that no ladies shall wear hats of more than certain dimensions in any theatre or public hall on pain of fine and imprisonment . It is said that the Cuban belligerents are . to be cheered in their struggle for independence by the recognition of another great power . Great Britain has unofficially informed our government of her friendly feeling toward Cuba and her intention to recognize the insurgents as belligerents . Whether love of liberty or purely commercial reasons dictate John Bull s actions in this case , the decision will be good news for the pat...

Herds , Flocks and Dairy [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 2 April 1896

Herds , Flocks and Dairy TO CATCH WOLVES S TOCKMEN west andnorthwest of the Black Hills are being put to 7 their wits ends to get even with the wolves and coyotes which are becoming so cunning that no ordinary trap will catch them , and they caii ho longer be induced to touch poisoned bait , no matter how skillfully prepared ; it rarely causes the death of even a baby wolf . Hunting the animals with dogs has been fairly successful , but most of the best hounds have been killed by the wolves . Shooting is the only « ure way of killing them , but it is difficult to get within range of them . , The latest scheme of stockmen is to fish for the animals . A stout fishhook is . baited : with some tempting morsel , in such a manner- as not to arouse the suspicions of a wolf or coyote . T 6 : the hook it attached a strong copper wire , which is . hidden in the grass , and to the opposite , end a stout anchor , formed of a log or heavy boulder , is . fastened . The anchor can be moved by the ...

A BARN WITHOUT HEAVY TIM -BERS . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 2 April 1896

A BARN WITHOUT HEAVY TIMBERS . THE question was asked a few weeks since by a subscriber : Can a barn be built without the use of heavy timbers ? In other words Can a barn of ordinary size be constructed without the skill of a master mechanic to frame , by rule of mortice and tenon with pins and braces , and such a building be safe for a barn up to any given size required by our western farmers ? As an architect , as well as contractor and builder for the past thirty years my experience may be of practical value to the farmers , as well as some build--ers . What is called the balloon frame Is purely and practically a western invention and like that of veneering a building with bricks , originated in the west . The necessities of the occasion called this style of building into being for small houses for the early settlers , and now whatever the size of the house may be , we use no other method in dwelling houses of wooden construction and in my practice of late years I do not use any ...

BOSTON WOOL MARKET . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 2 April 1896

BOSTON WOOL MARKET . The Boston Commercial Bulletin , March 21 , said of the . wool market : The sales are again insignificant . The American ; clip has opened in Arizona at 6 % cents . These prices do not afford an exact criterion , but the indications are that the opening prices will be on about last year s basis or slightly below . The difference in price between Americans and Australian and Cape wools is now so wide that sample lots of American are now being sold ; for export . Bradford , England , is beginning to suffer from the lack of American demand for cloth , with which the market is glutted . The sales of the week are 909 , 000 pounds domestic and 643 , 000 pounds foreign , against 698 , 000 pounds domestic and 530 ,- 000 pounds foreign last week , and 1 , 431 ,- 000 pounds domestic and 852 , 000 pounds foreign for the same week last year . The sales to date show an increase of 5 , 710 , 000 pounds domestic and 3 , 269 , 800 pounds foreign from the sales to the same date ...

OATS AND FIELD PEAS FOR GREEN FODDER . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 2 April 1896

OATS AND FIELD PEAS FOR GREEN FODDER . THE Purdue University Agricultural Experiment Station has just sent out the following which was prepared by the director , Prof . C . S . Plumb : Feeders are . coming to recognize more and more the necessity of plenty of green food for stock when grass is getting short . Owners of dairy cattle in particular feel this necessity . For two years at the Indiana Experiment Station ^ we have planted Canada field peas and oats , for this purpose 1 . The first year of planting ^ we scattered pea seed at the rate of a bushel and one-half an acre over the ground , and plowed this in three or four inches deep . A bushel and one-half of oat seed per acre was then scattered over this plowed land , which Was then thoroughly harrowed . In 1895 y the above practice was not followed . The land was plowed about seven inches deep , and then harrowed to a fine tilth . A mixture of oats and peas , at the rate of one and one-half bushels of each per acre , was then ...
