Live Stock and Dajry [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 4 June 1898

Live Stock and Dajry The Best Breed of Horses I have no fight to make against any pure breed of horses , but naturally have my favorite breeds and have reasons for the faith that is in me . It is evident that the breed that would make the best buggy horse would- not be- the best one to draw a brewery wagon , and neither of these would look in place hitched to a coach or family carriage or one of the big tally-ho coaches that are used so much In the cities . When it comes to choosing the breed every man must determine for himself which one will hick best with the mares he has to breed from . If his mares are small he should not make a violent cross and-breed them to a big lumbering stallion all beef and bone , for to do this is to breed structural defects that show often enough to make such a cross undesirable . Such a mare bred to a fine French or Oldenburg coach horse or to a Cleveland Hy will nine times In ten produce a roal that will be an honor to both sive and dam , while if sh...

Poultry and Bees [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 4 June 1898

Poultry and Bees New Form of Goose Culture A North Dakota farmer has discovered a new way of increasing his flock of geese without going through the usual formality of buying or hatching them , and yet he does not steal them . As the story goes , there is a great sand-bar near the home of the farmer . This piece of land projects into the Missouri river , but in such an exposed condition that a hunter cannot approach it without being seen . For many seasons the bar has been a favorite resting place for flocks of wild geese on their long flights to the far north . Recently the farmer in question saturated several pecks of corn with alcohol and distributed the doctored grain over the surface of the bar . The first flock of geese that alighted eagerly gobbled up the corn and soon after became decidedly intoxicated . Some of them rolled over and went to sleep ; others began to fight ; others squawked absurdly and staggered about the bar , and still others tried to fly , but only plunged ...
