ANOTHER ARCTIC EXPLORATION . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 27 May 1880

ANOTHER ARCTIC EXPLORATION . A demand is being made upon the Government for an appropriation in aid of another Arctic exploration . The time has gone by when the sensible thinking people of this country will approve of any grant for such a purpose . While the mystery of the northwest passage was locked up in the breasts of a few victims who had lost their lives in vain endeavor to penetrate it ; while again , the fate of Sir John Franklin remained unknown , and bis widow lived and kept his memory green in the minds of all the English speaking people by her devotion , it was not difficult to keep up the interest of the public in these Arctic explorations and voyages of discovery . Repeated undertakings , however , have failed to develop any thing , with the exception , perhaps , of the discovery by Prof . Hordenskjold of a cure for scurvy , of any material benefit to the human race , and we can not but regard any attempt to secure further appropriations of the people s money for such...

INSURANCE ITEMS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 27 May 1880

INSURANCE ITEMS . The following decision is one of much interest to those belonging to , or who contemplate joining , co-operative or mutual insurance organizations : Judge Blodgett , of the United States Circuit Court , Chicago , has made a ruling in regard to the claims of policy-holders in cooperative life insurance companies , which is well worth noting , although tbe general fact set forth in the opinion is so very apparent that we may almost marvel that any body should have been lunatic enough to raise the point in a court of law . Judge Blodgett decides that a bolder of a co-operative policy has no remedy whatever when his policy becomes a claim , unless in a spirit of charity , some other member voluntarily chooses to subscribe for the benefit of the heirs of the dead man . It is well , however , that this general fact should have the benefit of judicial sanction , as its importance becomes thereby all the more evident . It is respectfully commended to the thousands of haple...

LITERARY . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 27 May 1880

LITERARY . THE OTHER SIDE . The words are good , I said , I can not doubt ; I took my scissors then to cut them out : My darling seized my hand . Take care , she cried , There Is a picture on the other side . I fell to musing . We are too Intent On gaining that to which onr minds are bent ; We choose , then fling the fragments fur and wide , Hut spoil the picture ou the other side . A prize is offered ; others seek It too , Hut on we press with only self ln view , We gain our point ; and pause well satisfied , But oh . the picture on the other side . On this , a sound of revelry we hear ; Ou that , a wail of mourning strikes the ear ; On this , a carriage stands with groom aud bride , A hearse is waiting on tlie other side . We call It trash—we tread It roughly down , The thing which others might have deemed a crown ; An infant s eyes , anointed , see the gold , Where we , world-blinded , only brass behold . We pluck a weed , and fling It to the breeze ; A flower of fairest hue anot...

THE HOME . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 27 May 1880

THE HOME . TO CLEMENCE . Thou sleepest at the foot of the green hill In the last row ; And o er thy tomb a willow bends Its head And weepeth low . No monument on thy beloved dust Presses thee down . Ill-starred Clemence ! blighted ln thy young dawn By Death s cold frown . Thy name already through the snow and rain Can not be read , Upon the black wood of the cross that guards Thy frozen bed . But faithful Friendship keeps thy memory . And comes with flowers Unto the spot unknown to all but her , And weeps for hours , —From the French of Throvhlle Gautler . IN THE FLOWER BARDEN .-NO . 12 . One of the most beautiful ornaments of the garden is the gladiolus . And it is a flower of the easiest cultivation . It ought to have the place of honor among Fall flowers . Where all are good , it would be useless for me to attempt to give a list of tlie best . By reference to the various catalogues it will be seen that there is a wide difference in the price of bulbs . Some of them can be obtaine...

FOR YOUNG READERS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 27 May 1880

FOR YOUNG READERS . MRS . BLOGDENS DEMAND . [ This Is as literal a translation as could he made , consistently with the preservation of meter and rhvme , of one of those exquisite Chansons £ * hyiMoglqms of the Abbe Tlreboucbon , which have contributed so much to tbe education of the masses , by spreading among them scientific truths arrayed ln the attractive garb of poesy . In the original It ls entitled La Demande At lime . Blaju-dent . ] I . How I wish , Mrs . Blogden remarked , I could fly ! While pensively sipping ber tea . As she gazed at a flock of wild geese going by . Whose pinions extended were cleaving the sky . How happy those creatures must be ! II . If wings from my shoulder-blades only would sprout . How gay through the clouds I would whirl . Like those dear little Cupids that used to come out On the letters St , Valentine s Day brought about , Which 1 often received when a girl ! III . The learned Professor with elegant ease , To her wishes then said In reply : To ma...

MISCELLANEOUS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 27 May 1880

MISCELLANEOUS . USEFUL SUBSTITUTES . One of the most noticeable features of modern times is the immense progress which has been made , and the manufacturing ingenuity and scientific skill displayed , in finding substitutes for expensive or scarce raw materials and articles in general demand . The fact is apparent beyond question that art is fast invading the domain of nature . Chemistry is enabling us to replace animal and vegetable dyes , and to form artificial gems , or creditable imitations ; mineral oils replace animal and vegetable ones lor illuminating purposes , and the electric light is treacling upon the heels of gas . The expensive outfits for the whale fisheries are comparatively abandoned , whalebone and blubber from the huge marine mammals being in less request ; coral insects may proceed with their submarine constructions unmolested ; the sea tortoise will be pursued less eagerly for its carapace ; the ostriches of the desert be less sought after : and even the great p...
