I MR . WEBSTERS REMARKS [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 1 March 1832

I MR . WEBSTERS REMARKS Mr . President : as it is highly probable our I proceedings on this subject will be published , I deem it proper to state shortly the considerations which influenced my opinion , and will decide my vote . ; I regard this as a very important and delicate question . It is full of responsibility : and I feel the whole force of that responsibility . While I have , been in the senate , I have opposed no nomination of the President except for cause ; and I have at all times thought that such cause should be plain , and sufficient ; that it should be real and substantial not unfounded or fancied . I 1 have never desired , and do not now desire , to encroach , in the slightest degree , on the constitutional powers of the chief Magistrate of the nation . I have heretofore gone far , very far , in assenting to nominations which have ; been submitted to us . I voted for the nppoint- : ment of all the gentlemen who composed the first Cabinet ,- I have opposed no nominati...

I [ For the Sangamo Journal . ] SIR : —Many of the friends of Col . JOHNSON , who attended the meeting at Vandalia , have read with sorrow and disapprobation , the mass of sophistry and subterfuge , which filled almost two columns of your paper of the 9 th inst . We say sorrow , because we believed you to be a true friend of Jackson and your country , and uneontaminated by the great political juggler , who has so shamefully disgraced himself by supporting party instead of principle , while in high trust under this government ; and the whole tenor of whose political life clearly shews , that he expects preferment more from political manceuvering than from merit and services . To reward and punish is his maxim ! but sir , such is not the maxim of the friends of Col . Johnson . It is merit and services they go for . We are but plain men , and we assure you , that you cannot have a more l are in favor of Col . Richard M . John1 son , of Kentucky , for the office of Vice President ; an...

We are called upon by a writer in the Intelligencer for information touching the proposed Rail Road to Chicago . We presume the writer referred to has as much knowlege ou that subject as ourselves . What his motive is , therefore , we are at a loss to understand . The closing sentences of his remarks suggest a project for a Rail Road , which for aught we know , may be original with bun , and may deserve some attention : ¦• Do you of Sangamo prefer the establishment of a Rail Road on that [ the . Michigan ] route—or on a route that will hereafter he proposed , beginning at the western end of the Indiana Canal , thence through the counties of Edgar , Jtfacon and Smgamo to the IlliLook upon a map of the United St-. tr-s , trace the line of navigation from the mouth of the .
